Bird gets 53 in Celtics'

BOSTON (AP) - Larry Bird scored a
team-record 53 points last night as the
oston Celtics slammed the Indiana
acers 142-116 in National Basketball
Association play.
Bird's hot shooting, concentrated in
36 minutes, helped the Celtics avenge
their worst loss of the year, a 29-point
defeat by the Pacers Tuesday night. Bird
hit on 21 of 31 field goal attempts and
was 11-for-11 at the foul line.
THE CELTICS, greeted by scattered
boos as they entered usually friendly
Boston Garden, responded by commit-
ing four straight turnovers.
Down 2-0, Boston roared back with a
14-2 tear, including eight points by Bird,
and never trailed again.
Bird's 18 points and the Celtics'
swarming defense helped Boston build
a 37-16 first-quarter lead.
THE PACERS shot 33 percent in the
second period and trailed at the half 62-
40. Celtics center Robert Parish
dominated the middle, blocking four
*hots and grabbing 10 rebounds in the
first half.
The Pacers pulled to within 19 points
midway through the third quarter. But
Bird hit outside shots and layups at will,
his' 24 point in the quarter broke a 24-
year Celtic record and helping Boston
end the period. with a 108-74 lead.
Boston Coach Bill Fitch removed
Bird for the first six minutes of the final
quarter but, as the crowd chanted
"Larry, Larry," returned Bird with 8:10
emaining. Bird quickly scored five points
to break the team's regular season
reord of 51 points set by Sam Jones
in 1965.
'Bird received a standing ovation
when Fitch removed him for good with
5: 6 left.

Oldham retires
CHATTANOOGA, (AP) - Ray Oldham,
a 10-year National Football League

rictory
veteran who played most recently for
the Detroit Lions, said yesterday he is
retiring from the NFL.
However, he left open the possibility
that he might try to play next season for
the Chicago Blitz of the United States
Football League.
"I'VE TALKED to the people in
Chicago and there is a chance I will join
the team next year," said Oldham.
"ut the USFL still has to prove itself.
"It's still not up to what it should be,"
he added. "But it's going to open up a
lot of jobs and give a lot of NFL
veterans a lot more playing time than
they might otherwise have had."

Borg defeats Clerc

MONTE CARLO, Monaco (UPI) -
Bjorn Borg gratefully accepted the
surrender of third-seeded Argentinian
Jose-Luis Clerc yesterday to reach the
second round of his final Grand Prix
tournament, the Monte Carlo Open.
Clerc, ranked sixth in the world,
could not handle the big occasion and
capitulated totally, 6-1, 6-3.
"IT WAS really hard to play him,"
admitted Clerc, who also lost to Borg in
all three of their previous meetings.
Clerc never got his game going, won only
seven points in the opening five games
before holding service for the first time,
and squandered a 3-1 lead in the second
set to lose the next five games and the
match.
"I expected a much tougher match,
but he made a lot of simple errors,"
Borg said. "I wasn't very relaxed
because I haven't played for such a long
time, but I managed to keep my con-

centration throughout the match."
Borg made many unforced errors,
but far fewer than Clerc, and dropped
service only once during the 78-minute
match.
After taking the first set in 28
minutes, Borg had the chance to nail
down the match firmly in the opening
game of the second. He twice had break
point against Clerc's service, but the
Argentine recovered, only to collapse
finally four games later.
Borg next will meet rising French
star Henri Leconte, who said he would
try to go up to the net to attack Borg's
game, a tactic Clerc never tried.
