CHARGERS ROLL OVER ST. IGNACE, 54-43
E., Catholic wins 'D' title

By PAUL HELGREN
Apparently U.P. power only lasts for
one half.
St. Ignace LaSalle, the upper penin-
sula's representative in the Michigan
high school basketball finals this year,
held a 23-20 lead over heavily-favored
Detroit East Catholic at the half. But
the physically superior Chargers wore
down the Saints to win, 54-43, last night
at Crisler Arena.
THE WIN gave East Catholic its four-
th class 'D' title in five years. East
Catholic coach Dave Soules said his
team played poorly, but was obviously
pleased with the victory.
"We were flat," said Soules, "but I'd
rather be flat and win then play great
and lose."
While the Chargers started the con-

test shooting poorly, St. Ignace came
out fired up, spurred by chants of "U.P.
power" from the 1,500 or so Saints' fans
who travelled 300 miles to see the game.
BUT EAST Catholic applied full court
pressure to start the third quarter and
scored the first 10 points to grab a 30-23
lead. St. Ignace did not score until the
1:38 mark of the quarter.
By the fourth quarter the smaller
Saints began to tire and East Catholic
rolled to victory.
East Catholic, which outrebounded
LaSalle, 50-27, was led by Anthony
Sand's 19 rebounds and 12 points.
Clayton Hendley added 14 points for the
winners.
St. Ignace was led by Kevin Lever's
11 points. Center Jon Olson chipped in
10 points and nine rebounds for the run-
ners-up.

Kalamazoo Christian 81,
Flint Hamady 60
Kalamazoo Christian raced out to a
21-12 first quarter lead and breezed to
an 81-60 victory over Flint Hamady to
capture the Class C crown at Crisler
Arena last night.
Christian was paced by center Kevin
Dengey's 24 points and 10 rebounds.
Forward Mark Feddema added 17 poin-
ts.
"I DON'T HAVE words to describe
it," said Kalamazoo coach Dave
Wassink. "I thought we might be a
year away."
The game had long been decided
when Hammady star Frank Harris
crashed to the floor in the fourth quar-
ter and injured his head. Harris got up
and later went back into the game.
But later, as Harris was watching the
game from the sidelines, he collpased
and fell unconscious to the floor. While
onlooking Hamady. cheerleaders wept,
Harris was carried off the floor on a
stretcher but was apparently con-
scious.
Harris was rushed to St. Josephs
hospital. Officials said Harris had
sustained a "concussion."

Fidrych sent to minors by Bosox

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. (A p)-Mark
Fidrych, the 1976 American League
rookie of the year, was returned to the
minor leagues yesterday, vowing to
make it back to the Boston Red Sox.
"I have no doubts whatsoever that I
will be back," the 29-year-old right-
hander said. "If I had any doubts I
wouldn't be here."
FIDRYCH, plagued by arm problems
for several years, signed a minor
league contract with the Red Sox last
spring and began a long rehabilitation
program.
After intensive workouts during the
winter, he was invited to join the Red
Sox this spring as a non-roster player.
Now, after three exhibition game ap-
pearances, he has been returned to
Pawtucket of the International League.
"I expected it," Fidrych said after

taking a short walk from the Red. Sox'
clubhouse to the minor league complex
across the way.' 'They gave me my shot,
they gave me the ball. I just didn't do
what I was supposed to.
"IF I HAD thrown the ball my first
two times out as I did the last time, I
might still be around the big club. The
big thing is that the Red Sox showed in-
terest in me. I got invited to spring
training and got the ball. What more
can I ask?
"My big league spring training is
over. Now I've got to do the job here. I

still have the good feeling from the last
time I pitched. I had my velocity back
Now I've got to work on my control.
That starts tomorrow when I pitch
down here."

Special to the Daily
DETROIT - Minnesota's Don
Beaupre faced/37 shots, while the-Red
Wings' Corrado Micalef faced but 20.
Nonetheless, the North Stars beat
Detroit, 7-5, yesterday afternoon at Joe
Louis Arena.
"We played well enough to win," said
Wings' coach Nick Polano. "We were
just out-goaltended. Beaupre made out-
standing saves. Our guy... I don't
know."
THE LOSS JUST about eliminates
Detroit from the Stanley Cup playoffs.
With only four games remaining,
Toronto leads the Red Wings by five
points.
Detroit built a 4-1 lead only seven
minutes into the game.Walt McKechnie
started the scoring as the Wings kept
banging away at the puck in the crease
at 2:58. Seven seconds later John
Ogrodnick netted his 37th goal from 25-
feet in front.
Then the teams, with the Wings on the
power play, swapped goals. Neil Broten
got a short-handed goal for Minnesota.
Then Willie Huber tallied his 13th half-
a-minute later with the man advantage.
Huber came right back and got his 14th
less than a minute later to give Detroit
the three-goal advantage.
THAT'S WHEN the goaltending took
over. Beaupre made several outstan-
ding saves to keep the Stars in the

game. Micalef went to sleep, giving up
four goals on only nine shots in the first
period-and-a-half.
Mike Eaves got one Minnesota goal at
12:12 of the first period. Brian Bellows
tallied one at 10:04 of the second.
Warren Young then notched his first
NHL goal 24 seconds later. The teams
skated off after two periods tied at 4-4.
The Wings got the lead back at 3:11 of
the final stanza as Kelly Kisio banged in
his third of the season. The 5-4 lead
stood until 14:54, when defenseman
Brad Maxwell poked his tenth of the
season past Micalef, who failed to
challenge Maxwell.
THE MINNESOTA blue liner then
scored the clincher two minutes later
on a flailing slapshot from just inside
the blue line. Micalef failed to react on
the play, standing deep in the crease,
neglecting to cut the angle.
Tim Young added an empty-netter to
seal the win for Minnesota, which now
trails Chicago by only two points in the
race for the Norris Division title.
"We needed good goaltending," said
Polano. "We just haven't been getting it
lately. All year long I've been protec-
ting these guys. The party's over, let's
get realistic."
