By STEVE HUNTER It may be cold outside, but the women's tennis team has been cJtc generating some heat down at the track and tennis building. None of the Wolverines' matches went to three sets as ters, Michigan rolled over Western Michigan 9-0 yesterday. The ce. closest singles match came at the number six spot where Jan cJtc Silfen struggled to win the first set 7-5 but then broke loose in ches the second 6-1, ending what Silfen said "you might call a good slump." ains. IN- OTHER matches Mary Mactaggart and Stephanie xiety Lightvoet defeated Western's Sue Weigand and Nancy Martin Vince 6-2, 7-6; Juliet Naft and Paula Reichert beat the Broncos 24 Amy Yeast and Lynne Schendel 6-1, 7-5; and Isobel O'Brien cJtc and Ann Mazure won out over WMU's Janet Ray and Julie U-M's Hawthorne 6-2, 7-6. s for Both Mactaggart and Naft attributed their second set slips your to mental errors. "We sort of lost our concentration there for ity. a while," explained Mactaggart. Naft blamed concentration tions in her match but added "They got tougher in the second set." While the number one and three doubles had to win ment tiebreakers to put their sets away, the first five singles won at the fairly easily, losing a total of only twelve games. me of "I'M AS SURPRISED as anyone" said head coach Ollie f the Owens. "I really didn't think we'd win this easily." ins-n Neither did Western's coach Betsy Kuhle, who was disap- pointed with her team's performance. "This is a very tough surface to come into if you don't play on it every day," she said. 'I don't want to make excuses, we got walloped." Kuhie isn't the only one who doesn't seem to like Michigan's surface. Nearly everyone on Michigan's team characterizes it as slow, and in the case of Silfen, Owens feels "this surface doesn't favor her style of play." Another reason for the big margin of victory was the aggressiveness of the Wolverines. "They really came to play" Owens said of his team. "SOME DAYS you just get al of us going at once," said Mac- taggart. Silfen added, "We've been practicing so much and we really haven't played very many matches." Whatever the reason the team seemed happy with the vic- tory. A fter the match, one of the players confidently stated "sweep" and Owens said "I'm really pleased with this one." As for the lineup, coach Owens is still experimenting. "Numbers 4, 5 and 6 and pretty even," he said. "I switch them around a bit and will continue to do so until I get more results." So in spite of the weather, the surface and the opposition,, the women's tennis team is playing well. But with spring just two days old, Naft summed up the teams feelings, saying, "We're looking forward to playing outside." Pistons roll over Pacers By KATIE BLACKWELL It seems only fitting that a team's captain and only senior should lead the way to the season finale. Such is the case for the Michigan men's swim team. Captain Bruce Gemmell tops the list of Wolverine tankers headed to In- dianapolis for the NCAA Champion- ships being held today through Satur- day. Gemmell qualified for the meet in three individual events: 200 yard In- dividual medley, 400 yard Individual Medley and the 200 yard backstroke. He also joins Michigan's Big Ten Cham- pion 800 freestyle relay team of juniors Kirstan Vandersluis and Mark Noetzel and sophomore Gary Antonick. Noetzel earned a place at the NCAAs by setting a new pool record at Matt Mann pool with his personal best time of 44.66, a mark he expects to imporve upon at Indianapolis. Freshman Lance Schroeder im- pressed his competition in the 200 yard butterfly at the Big Ten Championships earlier this month with a meet record 1:47.56. As a result of the Big Ten meet, divers Kent Ferguson and Bruce Kim- ball qualified for the NCAA's on both the one- and three-meter boards. Freshman diver Mike Gruber, after failing to qualify at the Big Tens went on to the NCAA Regional diving qualification meet and will join Ferguson and Kimball on both boards. The Wolverines may be going into the : pool with a slight advantage. It is the same pool, the Indiana University Natatorium, that the tankers spent so much time in during the 1983 Big Ten Men's Swimming and Diving Cham- pionships. Softballers lose two Special to the Daily COLUMBIA, S.C. - The Michigan women's softball team closed out its one week road trip to South Carolina by losing both games of a double header to host team South Carolina. The Wolverines were shut out in the first game 5-0 as they turned in a rather unimpressive effort. SOUTH CAROLINA led off the first inning with four quick runs to put the game out of reach from the outset. "We kicked the ball around in this fir- st inning and it was over from there," said coach Bob DeCarolis. One more run in the fourth inning. closed out the scoring for the Gamecocks and three errors by Michigan's defense rounded out a rather dismal game for the Wolverines. "WE PLAYED poor defense and an uninspired game overall," said DeCarolis. In the second game Michigan looked a little better despite its 2-0 loss. Michigan pitcher Jan Boyd did very well through the fourth inning, retiring 12 batters in a row. In the fifth inning, however, South Carolina led off with a home run for its first score of the game. Then, a bloop single down the line put a runner on second who later scored during a run-down attempt closing out the scoring for South Carolina. The his were the only two it would get for the rest of the game off of Boyd. Michigan got three hits in the game but was again unable to capitalize. THESE TWO losses gave the Wolverines a 7-2 record for their road trip, snapping a seven game winning streak, and a 12-7 record in a pre-season play. DeCarolis termed the trip a "disap- pointment" because of the last day. "They were tentative, especially against a fairly good caliber team,'' said DeCarolis. The softball team is scheduled to open its regular season on April 2-3 in Min- nesota, weather permitting. Tigers 5, Dodgers 2 From wire service reports VERO BEACH, Fla. - Lou Whitaker collected four singles and drove in a run with a sacrifice fly to lead the Detroit Tigers to a 5-2 victory over the Los Angeles Dodgers yesterday. By RICK BYRNE Special to the Daily PONTIAC - Last night the Pistons took on the league's basement dwellers, the Indiana Pacers, before a sparse Silverdome crowd and rolled to a 109-96 victory. Indiana scored first, but Detroit came back fighting and never trailed by more than two. After being out- defended early,' giving up numerous turnovers, the team rallied on quick steals and stylish jams by John Long and Terry Tyler in the second period. Kelly Tripucka was the story for the Pistons as he pumped in 36 points with 4 assists and seven rebounds. Isiah Thomas also contributed 18 points for the winners. Clark Kellogg was the standout for the Pacers with 24 points in a losing ef- fort. The victory gives the Pistons their third win in their last four games. DAS COLA STYLISTS You Wash It .. . e..
