Though the team ended its season on Saturday with a 15-13 record, and no post-season bid, head coach Bill Frieder and everyone else in Crisler had nothing but well wishes for the 1982-83 Wolverines. "I WANT TO say that I was not disappointed in our players, even though I may have been disappointed with our record," said Frieder. "They are fun to be around, coachable, and they responded. Just when it looked like we were dead, we came back." The evening consisted of presentations of senior rings to Person, Brown and team manager Bill Mitchell, also a senior; and then the annual team awards were given. To no one's surprise, Eric Turner was honored as the team's most valuable player, in a vote by his teammates. Center Tim McCormick was awarded the Rudy Tomjanovich Trophy for most improved. THE WAYMAN BRITT Trophy (best defensive player) = = ._.. went to Leslie Rockymore; and the Steve Grote Trophy (hustler award) was picked up by freshman Butch Wade. The highlights of the evening, though, were the farewells given by Brown and Person. "Since I've been here at Michigan, it's been nothing but class," said Brown. "I'd like to tell you how much I love the guys. There's not a hoodlum among them," he joked. Person was a little choked up, but he managed to thank everyone for a great four years at Michigan. "I've had a few downs since being here, but the thing that kept me up was the Michigan people. I love Michigan and I love all you people," Person said. In a season which started with promise after last year's 18-7 record, and ended with a long trail of losses including two season ending defeats on the road against Iowa and Northwestern this past week,a bright spot has appeared. DESITE THE 4-22 Wolverines poor record, they don't have to search far for a rainbow amid the dark overcast skies that have followed the team throughout most of the season. Saturday, against the Wildcats, sophomore Peg Harte broke the Michigan single-season scoring record which was esablished only last year by All- American Diane Dietz. Harte finished the season with 581 points, as compared to Dietz's 562-point total and Harte's own freshman offering of 552, which had stood second to Dietz in the record book. But Harte couldn't carry the team alone. The two losses pinned on the Wolverines over the weekend gave them a 2-16 record and a tie for ninth place in the Big Ten conference. EARLIER THIS season in Ann Arbor, the Wolverines were able to handily defeat Iowa, 83-72. But the Hawkeyes managed to get even Thursday night at Iowa City. The two teams played even until the five-minute mark, when Iowa ran off 12 unanswered points. At the half, the Hawkeyes were in command, 36-24. the 12- point margin was as close as Michigan was able to get, finally losing by 22 points. Orethia Lilly led theWolverines effort with 14 points and 8 rebounds. Lori Gnatkowski added 10 points and Harte chipped in with eight, putting her within two of Dietz' record going into the Northwestern game. DONNA FREITAG led Iowa with 14 points, while Robin Anderson and Lisa Anderson each tallied 12. Saturday, in the season finale at Northwestern, the Wolverines fared no better than the last time the the Wildcats visited Crisler Arena for the Big Ten opener on January 7. Northwestern defeated Michigan 94-70 in that one and trounced the Wolverines this past weekend, 94-65. This time the Wildcats jumped off to a 6-0 lead and were never challenged. By halftime the 'Cats lead 45- 28. The second half was much the same as the first, with Northwestern leading at one point by 34 points. TYPING BY SANDI - 426-5217 Fast, Accurate, Reasonable. But this year was an exception according to the Michigan women's gym- 795 nastics team. 6lbs in front of a disappointing crowd of 500 on Friday and 1,000 on Saturday, Ohio State placed first (with 178 points) as was predicted by its number-one ranking at the start of the meet. Minnesota, Illinois, and Michigan State followed respectively. 8 lbs The defending Wolverine champions finished fifth. S "THE MEET was really boring," said Michigan gymnast Dayna Samuelson. "It lacked enthusiasm; that was the sad part." n From the team's point of view, the sad [NC. part was that Michigan was trapped in- SERVICE to a low scoring position by its pre- competition sixth-placeranking. The Wolverines believed they missed top points because they competed in a cJtc session reserved for the four lowest- ranked teams. That led judges to offer better scores to highly-ranked squads later, in coach Sheri Hyatt's opinion. C&C "We would have been scored higher in the other session," said Hyatt. "The n, thesis, whole team was slightly underscored .1 e. 662-9948. cJ047 or .2 too low. The other lower teams were, too." DEFENDING vault champion Kathy Beckwith was victim to that very problem, in Hyatt's eyes. "She did a great Beck R vault worthy of 9.0, but was rated 8.85." .. .fifth on b. takefift A meeting will be held among Big Ten officials to consider changing the format of the Championships. One competing session for all the teams, as used for the regionals and nationals, may be adopted. Hyatt is hoping the change will result. "We felt that if we had competed in one session that we could have finished a definite third," she said. "We did hit four out of four events. We were very consistent." THE WOLVERINES' performance was successful as compared with the rest of their season. Vault, as usual, was strong and Michigan came in fourth in the event. Problems on the floor exer- cise and bars led to sixth- and seventh place finishes, respectively. Having missed two points, the Wolverines finished with 170.75 which probably will not be enough to qualify them for the Regional Championships. Individually, however, Beckwith ap- pears to have qualified and so may have Samuelson. Spots in the regionals will be awarded next Monday. As for the rest of the squad, they believe a boring finish for next season is unlikely. "They are really excited," said Hyatt. "They see the potential they have." For the four Michigan wrestlers who went there for the NCAA Wrestling Cham- pionship this past weekend it must have felt like an even longer trip back as the quartet was bounced out of the tourney quickly and abruptly by their opponen- ts. The tourney which brought together the country's finest collegiate wrestlers wasn't exactly slated in Michigan's favor. Of the four only Rob Rechsteiner (heavyweight) was seeded ninth. And only he and Kirk Trost (190 pounds) were guaranteed first round draws. IN HIS qualifier, Rechsteiner lost to number two seed John Reich (Navy) on a 9-0 decision. Reich followed with vic- tories over Steve Porter (Wash. St.) and Pete Capone (Hofstra) to gain a semi-final berth. In NCAA tournamen- ts, when a wrestler loses to an opponent who reaches the semi's, he is allowed to "wrestle back" in a consolation tour- nament. In the consolations, Rechsteiner came back to pin Porter before being knocked out of the tour- nament by Capone, 7-1. ough going Fagan proved more successful in the qualifier, holding back Ron Baker (Kent State) with a narrow 10-9 decision. The win put Fagan into the first round with Rob Rechsteiner and Trost. The first round proved to be the only round the Wolverine wrestlers com- peted in. The first Michigan wrestler, Fagan, had the tide of his first match turn on him and he lost by a single point to Dave Grant (Kentucky), 10-9. Trost was the next to fall. His downfall was to number nine seed Tim Morrison (Rider College) in a 12-2 major decision. The last hope for Michigan was Rechsteiner who lost: a 7-3 decision. 0 Accessories discounted too.
