SPORTS The Michigan Daily Sunday, January 9, 1983 Page 7 'Icers cool Flames, 5-2 By TAM BENTLEY Michigan got off to a fiery start against Illinois-Chicago last night and extinguished the Flames 5-2 at Yost Ice Arena. The Wolverines were clearly the ominant force in the first period as the majority of the play was in Flame territory. The scoring began early as the game's first goal was netted after only three minutes of play. Michigan's Ray Dries took a pass from behind the Illinois-Chicago net and fired it past goalie Rich Blakey from directly in front of the goal. LESS THAN a minute later, co- captain Ted Speers, with some fancy puck handling, out-maneuvered a Flames opponent and slipped an unassisted goal past Blakey's left side. Michigan goalie Jon Elliott tried to keep the Flames scoreless in the first period by knocking down a slapshot from the blue-line but the blocked puck was picked up by Illinois-Chicago's Jeff McIntyre, who then fired it into the net to put the Flames on the board. The fir- st 20 minutes ended with the Wolverines on top 2-1. Michigan's Jim McCauley opened the second period with another Wolverine goal as he picked up a blocked Speers slapshot and rifled it past Blakey. SPEERS THEN scored the fourth Michigan goal at 5:52 by making an in- credible off-balance, back-handed shot that slipped past the Flames goalie. The Wolverine scoring barrage con- tinued as McCauley netted yet another goal, making use of a Michigan power play opportunity as Flame Dave Cronin was in the penalty box for holding. Wolverine goalie Elliottwas able to hold Illinois-Chicago scoreless in the second period, thus the third stanza opened with the Michigan icers on top by a comfortable 5-1 margin. THE THIRD period was low in scoring but high in brutality as the two teams went after each other without reserve, knocking each other into the boards and literally attacking anyone who had possession of the puck. Illinois-Chicago scored the period's lone goal when a shot by McIntyre sailed over Elliott's shoulder and caught the upper right corner of the net. The game ended with a 5-2 Michigan victory and, accompanied by the over- time win Friday night, gave the ninth- place Wolverine icer squad a much- needed weekend series sweep. "The key to our play was that we had a pretty good defense," said Michigan coach John Giordano. "The defense played better this weekend and we're hoping to build on this." Illinois-Chicago is in a three-way tie for the CCHA's tenth place and holds a 5-16 record, which may have had something to do with the Wolverines' back-to-back wins. "They're not the toughest team to play," said Giordano, "and our goalie made the saves." Giordano and his Wolverine squad will travel next weekend to the north country of the upper penninsula and Sault Ste. Marie to take on the Lake Superior State Lakers, who are curren- tly among the three teams tied for last place in the CCHA.
