SPORTS The Michigan Daily Tuesday, February 15, 1983 -~ t fsi Seelt By LARR YMISHKIN Chief Illini gets the wrd .. . . .. cagers alive and well AS I SEE IT, the Michigan Wolverines finally played up to their potential on Saturday with a 74-67 revenge victory over Michigan State. Thus, serving notice to the rest of the Big Ten teams that the Wolverines will be tougher the second time around. The folks down at Illinois, however (Michigan's next opponent), already know about that, following a recent phone conversation between Sparty, the MSU mascot, and Chief Illini after Saturday's game. Sparty: Hi ya Chief, how are things down at Champaign? Chief: Not too bad, but what's this I hear about you guys losing to those "arrogant asses" in basketball? They're only supposed to win in football. Sparty: I guess you know that better than anyone! What was it, first and goal from inside the five ... Chief: Okay, okay. Don't rub it in. I haven't seen you out in Pasadena for a while either. But what happened on Saturday.? Sparty: You wouldn't believe it. We figured the game would be a piece of cake. Not only were those maize and blue fools on a five-game losing streak, but we really stuck it to them the week before in. . . ah.. .in.. .ah ... Chief: You mean in Ann Arbor? Sparty: Yeah, yeah, there. I've never been able to say the name of that place since I was rejected from school there and had to come here. Chief: Not smart enough huh? That's probably why you lost to them. Sparty: Real cute. No, really, you wouldn't believe how well they played. I mean this was not the same team we faced the week before. Those Wolverines were making baskets as fast as they could get-their hands on the ball. In the second half alone they shot 55 percent from the field. Hell, they came out after halftime and blew us away. Chief: Who were their big guns, as if I can't.guess. Sparty: Well, Eric Turner got his 21 points and the big guy, Tim McCor- mick had an impressive 19 points and eight relpunds. Chief: I don't understand, what happened to Sam Vincent and Kevin Willis? Couldn't they slow those guys down? Sparty: Arse you kidding? Vincent could only get 17 and Turner shot over him all night. And McCormick was even more impressive. Not only did he hold Willis to only eight points, but he also forced him to take poor shots. Willis was three-for-12! Chief: Why didn't you guys just foul them? Everyone knows Michigan can't make the big free throws. Sparty: Chief, you must be smoking that peace pipe too much or something. They shot over 76 percent from the line. McCormick alone hit 11 of 12 and Turner made nine-of-12. And they made the free throws down the stretch, unlike last week when they folded in the last few minutes. Chief: Well, we'll be ready for them. We'll just let Derek Harper run all over Turner and Efrem Winters control the boards. Sparty: Yeah, well if Vincent and Willis couldn't do it, don't believe that Harper and Winters can do it. Chief: No problem. If all else fails we'll just get the crowd so fired up and loud that those young Wolverines will be psyched out and mess up. Sparty: Hey, we can get just as loud as you guys and that didn't seem to faze them a bit. In fact, I think it probably fired them up. And let's not forget all the impact your "loud" fans had on their football team - they stopped you guys on four straight downs. Chief:d-Enough about the football game already. We beat them last time and we can do it again. Sparty: Yeah, that's what we thought. I'm telling you, these guys are tough. Chief: I still say we'll walk over them. Sparty: Let's bet on the game then - I'll take Michigan. Chief: What are we betting? Sparty: The winner doesn't have to play them in football next year, but the loser has to play them twice. Chief: Uh, what were those shooting percentages again? Sparty: 47 percent from the field and 77 percent from the line .. . (Click). Hello, hello, Chief, are you there? Damn, that would have been a good bet. Isaac's no missing Pei By JESSE BARKIN Something interesting happened to Isaac Person this weekend in East Lansing -he played. The 6-6 senior had previously been all butbanished from the court during Big Ten play, but in the Wolverines' 74-67 victory over Michigan State on Saturday, Person not only played,22 minutes, but he also started. Going into the game against the Spar- tans Person had started only one Big Ten game (at Iowa), and had scored a conference total of just seven points. But sometime during practice the week before, coach Bill Frieder decided to go with the forgotten man on the Wolverine bench, and Person responded with seven points and turned in a fine defensive effort against Spartan sharpshooting guard Sam Vincent. "WE TOLD the guys on Monday and Tuesday that I was going to juggle the lineups around," said Frieder yesterday before practice. "It depended on the com- petition during the week and what it looked like. We rotated it around and then sometime on Thursday we decided to go with Ike. "I thought it would give him aspark.., and we needed the team leadership," he added. "One of the big guys (Frieder started only one guard - Eric Tur- ner) had to guard one of their guards. Ike did a good job in the first half. He set the tone for the game." ''I learned I was starting the day before the game,,, said Person. "We were losing, and needed something to give us a lift, and that's why I think he took the chance. IT DEFINITELY WAS a gamble. The Wolverines had lost five straight games, including three con- secutive home defeats to Purdue, Illinois and Michigan State, and something was definitely needed. But the way Person had played so far this season, he surely could not have expected too much. Last season, Person was a starter for the Wolverines and averaged 9.8 points a game and 6.2 rebounds while playing against much taller and stronger Big Ten centers. With the comeback of cen- ter Tim McCormick this season, Person was able to move back to his natural forward position and was expected to be a team leader and probable starter. But as the season unfolded, Person did not play up to his and Frieder's expectations. After playing poorly against Oklahoma State earlier in the year, he lost his starting position and his playing time had decreased ever since. IN THE BIG Ten season, Person scored his only field goal against Indiana, after the outcome had 4 w Page 9 Y . rson now9- alreadybeen decided. Person' was justifiably down,. , but he was not out. "I was kind of upset (at not getting playing time) : for maybe one game or so, but I realized it was gonha be like this for the rest of the season, so I just had toji make the best of it," he said. "I still had a job to do being a leader for the guys, especially in practice. I. tried not to think negatively, but to concentrate 'ofr,; being positive.' When his chance finally came again - in the forn' of a starting assignment at Michigan State - Person was ready. "When I was out there playing I felt very con- fident," he continued. "I think I showed the coaches ' that I still can contribute and I'm looking for a good game on Thursday (at Illinois). I was looking for that game that would bring back some confidence, and, now I have that game behind me." Besides Person, Frieder juggled the lineup even more last Saturday, inserting 6-8 freshman Paul Jokisch for the first time in the Big Ten season.., Taking the seats on the bench were Dan Pelekoudas- and Richard Rellford. "NOTHING'S PERMANENT," said Frieder about, his lineup changes. "We'll go game-to-game, half-to-, half and decide what lineup will work best for each. particular game. We've got enough guys that we can. adjust." One reason he inserted Person is that he wanted to make sure Pelekoudas could play well enough whewr he got in. "I don't think Dan can go 40 minutes and be effective for 40. So the best thing to do is not start" him. Then, when we need him for stability, he'll .be, fresh off the bench." And this strategy, along with a newly regained cOt- fidence, might just keep Person off the bench a little, more for the remainder of the season. 4M Isaac Person lays it up and in.
