Spartan gymnasts coast d as The Michigan Daily-Sunday, February 13, 1983-Page 9 past hobblec By PAUL RESNICK :Michigan State won by a technical knockout in the second e ent of yesterday's men's gymnastics competition when 1Aichigan's Gavin Meyerowitz's knee-cap was knocked out of paee as he fell off the pommel horse. ,.The Wolverines' only back-up all-arounder, Steve Schein- tan, had already been called on to fill in for injured Dino *anus (shoulder). As a result, Michigan had to compete ,4ith four men against MSU's five on the rings, parallel bar nxphigh bar. ,.THAT WAS LIKE playing the last five innings of a nine- inp ng baseball game without an infield. The final score was 26#.15 to 235.80 in favor of the Spartans. Under new collegiate rules this season, five gymnasts compete in each event and all five scores count. "The rules are the rules," said Spartan coach George Szypula. "Even in the/Olympic games they have that cushion (against injury) of competing six men with five scores counting. "Both: (Michigan coach) Loken and I fought the rules committee," he added. "The rules are stupid, but they're still the rules." 6ZYPULA, POINTED OUT that MSU is also hobbled and Iuffered a fate similar to Michigan's last week as a result of I Wolverines injuries. "We outlimped them," he said. "We're a 270 team," said Spartan assistant coach John Nelson. "We had an all right meet...but we're going to put a 270 team together by Big Ten time." Loken, the eternal optimist, managed to see the bright side -of the loss. "Super show by the individuals," he said. In fact, Michigan gymnasts placed first in every individual event save one. Milan Stanovich and Rich Landman both received their best all-around scores of the season, 55.8 and 53.20 respec- tively, good for first and third in the competition. Stanovich also took first on the-high bar with a 9.6. Only on pommel horse did Michigan State capture the top spot with Greg Bosscawen's 9.6. Even in that event, Michigan fared well as Dave Miller posted his best score of the season, 9.4. Despite the strong individual performances, the Wolverines' future still depends on the injury situation, which may have taken yet another turn for the worse. Stanovich was bothered during floor exercises by an ankle in- jury he sustained in practice last week. He hopes that a week of rest will allow full recovery. The rest of the team must be hoping, too. The Up~ersity of: Michigan not only in- 1a ted our team but the entire prin- c~,es behind the gymnastics 'Rasavana accused Michigan coaches of hassling judges and having an all- around lack of respect for the Spartan's gyninasts. INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, Kasavana's hard feelings were no reflection of his lady tumblers' perfor- mance as they compiled a team score of 708, besting the Wolverines' 168.9. Wichigan State didn't beat us, we bean ourselves," commented Michigan coach Sheri Hyatt, "We were lacking confidence and as a result we just didn't 1 as good as we could have." - The deciding event was the balance bem. Michigan tumblers lost grip consistently, leading to unusually low scores. Senior Angela Deaver, the Wolverines' premier performer in the event, had one slip in her otherwise old routine resulting in a surprisingly No score of 8.4. Thus, the Spartans took.' control of the top three beam positions; Linda Guhl placed first with an4.75. si HE SCORING WAS tough but con- sistent," said Deaver. Other Michigan all-arounders, Christy Schwartz and Kathy Beckwith turned in strong efforts as well. Sch- wartz scored a 9.0 on the bars, second only to Spartan Frances Marino's 9.05, while Beckwith took third with an 8.95. Michigan State's Kir McCabe and Marino earned:first- and second-place all-around scores of 35.05 and 35.00, respectively. Wolverine Beckwith grabbed third with a 34.85. "This is the first meet in a while that I feel I gave 100 percent," said Marino. "And I guess my all-around score shows it." "It's not like State is that awesome or anything," commented Beckwith, "Ifr we had performed up to par, we could have easily beat them." DON'T BLOW UP. DON'T BURN OUT.
