SPORTS ,The Michigan Daily Sunday, February 13, 1983 Page 7 - ------- ----- 'Bulldogs skate by Blue icers again, 7 -1m By MIKE MCGRAW Special to the Daily BIG RAPIDS - A four-goal outburst in. the second period was enough, to power Ferris State past the Michigan hockey team for the second straight night, 7-4, at the FSC Ice -Arena. The loss virtually ended the playoff hopes of the Wolverines, because Notre Dame defeated Bowling Green last night to take a four-point lead over Michigan for eighth place in the OCHA and the final league playoff spot. -' THE WOLVERINES had problems clearing the puck out from in front of their net as Ferris scored four times on rebounds. "Our inability to clear rebounds was the biggest factor," said goal of the season from the top of the right face- off circle. Downing returned to the ice later in the period. Less than a minute later, Paul Cook of Ferris put in the rebound of Jim File's rocket shot from the blue line to tie the game. AFTER TWO Ferris goals were nullified, the Bulldogs got one that counted at 13:58 when Steve Meldrum tipped in the rebound of a Nick Manich shot. The Wolverines evened the score with just over a minute left in the period, as Tom Stiles out fought two Ferris skaters for the puck and hit Kelly McCrimmon all alone in front of the net, who then fired it past FSC goalie Norm Young. The Bulldogs dominated the second period scored on a breakaway with just over three minutes remaining. In between, Scott Seaver picked up the seventh Bulldog goal, skating in uncontested and beating Michigan's replacement goalie Mark Chiamp. Michigan was outshot 47-21 in the contest, and Giordano attributed this to the Wolverines' style of play. "We might have worked the puck around too much tonight," he said, "but we're more of a finesse team and don't try to crash the net as much as they do." With the series sweep, Ferris State needs only three more points in its next four games to ensure a spot in the playoffs. The Bulldogs face Michigan State next week, before finishing the season at Lake Superior. Mirhaa nn ho tn o FIRST PERIOD Scoring: 1. M-Mclntyre (Speers, Spring) 9:00. 1. Unbeaten tanker's sink Buckeyes, 64-49 By KATIE BLACKWELL "It was just an everyday meet." said Michigan men's swim coach, Jon Urbanchek, of yesterday's victory over Ohio State. "There was no pressure, we just had to win it to main- tain our record." And an everyday meet it was. The Wolverine tankers had no problem keeping their un- defeated record intact as they upped it to 5-0 with the aid of a decisive 64-49 victory over the Buckeyes. The victories in the 16 events were evenly split between the two teams, but Michigan was able to accummulate more poin- ts. FRESHMAN SENSATION, Benoit Clement, completely dominated his competition in the 1650-yard and 500-yard freestyle events. In the 1,650, Clement stopped the clock a full 20 seconds before teammate Jeff Wriston, with a time of 15:33.10. Clement and Wriston com- bined again to place 1-2 with times of 4:32.33 and 4:40.82, respectively, in the 500-yard freestyle. In his final performance in Matt Mann pool, senior captain Bruce Gemmell went out in style as he won the 400 Individual Medley (4:05.08) and the 200-yard backstroke (1:53.95). By swimming an exhibition 200-yard breaststroke, Gemmell has now competed in every event throughout his college career. Freshman Lance Schroeder added to the cause with a pair of firsts in the 100-yard but- terfly (50.77) and the 200-yard butterfly (1:50.62) outdistancing Ohio State Junior Ed Melanson by five seconds. Both the one- and three-meter diving events went to OSU's All-American, Mark Bradshaw. Bradshaw beat out Wolverine diver Bruce Kimball 332.70 to 323.10 in the one-meter and 345.30 to 341.60 in the three-meter. Women cagers host MSU It's time for a rebound. Amidst all the hoopla of the 10th anniversary of women's varsity athletics at Michigan, the women cagers have a shot at climbing out of the Big Ten cellar to an eighth-place tie with Michigan State.. All they have to do is defeat the Spartans in Crisler Arena today at 2:00p.m. To do this they will have to rebound better than they have most of this season, as MSU boasts two of the conference's top seven board- clearers in Lil Preston (11.3 per game) and Jackie Carter (9.0). "REBOUNDS WILL BE important," said Michigan head coach Gloria Soluk. "We need to get offensive boards and put them in.' Filling that need may be difficult, but Soluk is trying to alleviate her problems by changing her offense and returning top scorer Peg Harte to the starting lineup. Harte will join guards Lori Gnatkowski and Orethia Lilly as well as fellow frontliners Wendy Bradetich and Sandy Svoboda. The highlight of the game will not be the on- court match-ups, but the halftime festivities. The celebration is to honor past and present athletes, coaches and others who have had in- fluence in the department. -JEFF FAYE THE WOLVERINES went on to shut out the Chippewas, 47-0, racking up four pins by Mike DerGarabedian, 126-pounds; Tim Fagan, 158; Scott Rechsteiner, 167; and Rob Rechsteiner, HWT. Wray, who described himself as "more in- tense than usual" in practice this week, knowing that he would start this weekend, said that the thought of his premier collegiate vic- tory "didn't really hit me until after I satr down." Michigan also blew out Eastern Michigan, 38-10, in its second match of the night. Seniors Tim Fagan and Mark Pearson wrestled their last matches in Crisler Arena with great suc- cess. Fagan gained a pin against Central's Bill Fountain and a hard-fought 11-7 victory over the Huron's Mark Leyrer. Pearson was the mirror image, achieving a fall over Eastern's Craig Petosky and decisioning the Chippewa:' Jeff Mills, 9-5. "IT FELT GOOD to go out winning," said Pearson. Pearson wasn't the only happy one. "I was real pleased with the kids," said Michigan head coach Dale Bahr. "This gets us in an up mood." With the Big Ten Tournament and the NCAA's right around the corner, that's impor- tant. Bahr summed it up saying "we have two weeks to try and peak." Those two weeks will include practice twice a day. And if the Wolverines can get higher than they were last night, it could be more good news for maize-and-blue fans and participants. ..... . .. .. .. . . .. .......
