Erving, who has averaged 28.2 points per game in his last seven contests, also had four steals and four blocked shots in helping the 76ers, 43-7, romp to their 30th victory in their last 34 contests. Erving, held to just 10 points for the first two and a half quarters, erupted midway in the third quarter. In a three- minute span, he connected on two alley- oop baskets, a slam dunk and a drive through the lane to help the 76ers move to a 79-67 advantage. Bucks 102, Trail Blazers 92 MILWAUKEE (AP) - Sidney Mon- crief tossed in 28 points and Marques Johnson added 20 to lead the Milwaukee Bucks to a 102-92 National Basketball Association victory last night over the Portland Trail Blazers. Junior Bridgeman added 13 points and Steve Mix 12 for the Bucks while Jim Paxson led the Blazers with 22 points. Baxson and Calvin Natt scored nine points apiece in the first quarter as the 116-110 Trail Blazers, scoring 11 consecutive points over one stretch, grabbed a 22-19 lead. But Mix came off the bench and sank three shots in a row to help the Bucks to a 39-28 lead. Milwaukee held Portland to three field goals in the first 5%/2 minutes of the second quarter and led 49-43 at halftime. Bullets 104, Rockets 100 LANDOVER, Md. (AP) - Don Collins scored 10 of his 17 points and Jeff Ruland nine of his 19 in the fourth quarter as the Washington Bullets rallied to defeat the Houston Rockets 104-100 in a National Basketball Association game last night. The Rockets, who have lost eight in a row on the road and whose away record of 2-22 is the worst in the NBA, pulled to within 101-100 with 21 seconds remaining on a field goal by Caldwell Jones. Washington's Ricky Sobers was fouled away from the ball by Wally Walker in the final seconds. He sank the free throw, and after the Bullets regained possessiondof the ball, Walke fouled Sobers again and he made both attempts from the foul line with four seconds left. 4 Illini upset Illinois' George Montgomery drives for the basket against Northwestern's Gaddis Rathel (33) last night in Chicago. Express signs 0 Ail-A meric LOS ANGELES (AP) - Tom Ram- sey of UCLA, the NCAA's top quarter- back in passing efficiency this past season, signed a four-year contract yesterday with the Los Angeles Ex- press of the new United States Football League. No other terms of the contract were announced at the press conference an Ramsey called to announce Ramsey's signing. "TODAY'S SIGNING of Tom Ram- sey should give the Los Angeles con - munity a clear indication of the LA Ex- press' strong commitment to build a first-class professional football team," said Alan Harmon, president and co- owner of the club. "Our coaches felt that Tom was the most effective quar- terback in college football last season . . He should be a cornerstone of Express football for many years to come." Ramsey, named a second-team All American this season, was the most valuable player in UCLA's Rose Bowl victory over Michigan last month. UCLA's starting quarterback for most of the last three seasons, Ramsey led the Bruins to a 10-1-1 record this past season, including the 24-14 victory in the Rose Bowl. Ramsey was a fifth-round draft selec- tin of the Express, which opens its first season March 6. Ramsey completed 209 of 366 passe for 2,986 yards and was intercepted just 10 times this season.
