I SPORTS__ The Michigan Daily Tuesday, February 8, 1983 Page 8 SPORTS OF THE DAILY Hoo psters fall into Big TO By PAUL HELGREN After trailing by three points at the half, Michigan State scored the first 10 points of the second half en route to a 74- 60 triumph over the women's basketball team Sunday at East Lansing. The loss was the seventh straight for Michigan and dropped its record to 3-16, 1-8 in the Big Ten. The game was important because going into the contest the two teams were tied for eighth place with identical "1-7 records. Michigan's loss, coupled with previously winless Iowa's win over Purdue, dropped the Wolverines into last place. MICHIGAN started strong in the first . half, leading by as many as seven poin- ts. Led by freshmen Wendy Bradetich and Sandy Svoboda, who combined for 18 points and 10 rebounds in the first half, the Wolverines managed to hold a 31-28 lead at intermission. But the second half was all Michigan State. After the Spartans opened up with a 10-point binge, Michigan's Oret- hia Lilly hit a jumper to pull the Wolverines to within five, at 38-33, but they could come no closer than that the rest of the way. Michigan fouled frantically near the end of the contest in hopes of getting back into the game, but the Spartans hit their free throws and put the game out of reach. PEG HARTE, who did not start for the first time this season, led Michigan with 16 points. Lilly added 14 points and Bradetich finished with 12. Michigan State forward Liz Preston led the Spartans with 19 points and 15 rebounds. Jackie Carter added 15 poin- ts and 10 boards. Michigan will get a chance to avenge Sunday's loss and climb out of the cellar when they meet Michigan State in a rematch this Sunday at Crisler Arena. Tracksters preview MSU The 60th annual Michigan State Relays served as a sneak preview for the upcoming dual meet between the Spartans and Michigan. The 12-team meet last weekend at East Lansing featured many in-state schools, including the two arch-rivals. Although scores were not kept, Michigan placed high in several events including two first place finishes. It was the performance of freshman Todd Steverson that received high praise from coach Jack Harvey. With a time of 1:10.35, Steverson finished second in the 600-yard run behind Mar- cus Sanders of MSU,who is considered one of the best in the country. Michigan grabbed top honors in two events. Derek Harper's leap of 24'-5 3/4 won the long jump. The shuttle hurdle relay team of Derrick Stinson, Dave Hall, Mike Sudarkasa and Tom Wilcher won that event. Michigan also had a number of second place finishes. Miler Ron Sim- pson crossed the tape in a time of 4:07.50. Meanwhile, John Neilson grabbed second in the shot put, while en cellar two other Wolverines had fourth and fif- th finishes. Finally, Michigan took second honors in the two-mile relay. Three relay records whichrwere held by former Wolverines were broken over the weekend by the Spartans. But the Michigan thinclads get a crack at avenging those stolen marks this Friday and Saturday. -JEFF MOHRENWEISER Basketball It's playoff time again. Residence Hall A strong second-half performance lifted Trouser Mouser to a 51-29 thrashing of Oxford Seely in the A playoff Division. The Mousers, who were locked in a tight 14-9 contest at half time, poured in 37 points in the second half to turn the game into a laugher. Dave Karp and Andy Arton led the scoring effort with 16 and 12 points, respectively. Gomberg A won a triple-overtime thriller defeating the Alice Lloyd Mystics 56-54. Gomberg had opportunities to seal the victory in the first two overtimes, but missed a layup in the first OT, and a free throw in the second extra session. Finally, they hit two free shots in the last minute of the third overtime to notch the win. Jim Ruth, who led the team in scoring with 14 points commented, "It was great to pull.it out. We had them by 15 at half- time, but we let them come back. They had a strong press. I'm just glad we won." Womens The Kamikazees broke open at 16-16, and dive bombed the Bush Bunnies 46-20 in women's competitive action. "We only had five players and we were tired," said captain Mary Quinn. "What made the difference was we came -out with a press in the second half and that got us going." Quinn helped the team effort with a game high 24. points. In more women's action, the MTs defeated the Swishs 25-18 in a defensive struggle. The MTs jumped out to an early 10-point lead and never trailed in the contest. Mary Bithowski took game scoring honors with 17 points for the winners. The other women's teams, Armageddon and Zeta Tau Alpha, had easy wins on Sunday via forfeits. Independent The Bad News Bears had a bad day on Sunday losing to Too Hot to Handle by a 38-22 count. Neither team was too hot in the first half as both teams struggled to find the basket. In the second half, Too Hot heated up and scored the opening eight points. Wayne Veale led a balanced scoring attack with 11 points. Mike Thompson poured in 34 points to lead the Ministers to an improbable 61-34-drubbing of the Unbeatables. Thompson had an awesome afternoon hit- ting on a host of long range jumpers. He was quite modest about his im- pressive afternoon, and gave credit for the victory to a strong team effort. In other Independent action the Express defeated the Juice 46-38. Adams Bom- bers disposed of Gomberg's Worst 43-25, and Gold B romped over Comin' Adams by a 51-22 count.
