SPORTS The Michigan Daily Sunday, January 16, 1983 Page 7 Icers dump Lakers, 2- 1 By TAM BENTLEY Special to the Daily SAULT STE. MARIE - If it hadn't been for the uniforms, no one would have recognized last night's Michigan icers as the same squad that played the Soo Lakers on Friday night, as tight checking and outstanding goaltending keyed Michigan to a hard-fought 2-1 win over Lake Superior State College. The first period of action progressed for just over 17 minutes without either team scoring. Michigan finally took charge and netted the first and lone goal of the period at 17:01. LAKE SUPERIOR goalie Lawrence Dyck saved a Wolverine slapshot from the left face-off circle, but Paul rKobylarz jumped in to pick up the rebound. Kobylarz went on to easily slip the puck into the goal behind Dyck, who was out of the net at the top of the crease. Less than two minutes before the period ended, the Lakers were dealt an unfortunatek break regarding a costly penalty. Chris Dahlquist received a five-minute major butt-end penalty, brought about by ramming a Wolverine opponent with the butt end of his stick. OThe penalty disqualified the defen- semen from the game, and teammate Kevin Moore served the five-minute term of the infraction. The penalty was the first major. for the Lakers this year. The infraction did not aid the Late Tippett goal gives Wolverines close win Wolverines though, as the Soo Lakers were able to fight off the power play. Lake Superior netted its first goal 5:32 into the second period to tie the score at 1-1. Captain Steve Mulholland, on a power play, caught a rebound off of Michigan goalie Jan Elliott's pads and was able to sneak the puck into the net for his 14th goal of the season. THE LAKERS got justice for Dahlquist's disqualification as, what would have been the Wolverines' go- ahead goal, was called back. Joe Milburn's apparent goal was ruled to have been kicked into the net, and although co-captain Brad Tippett and coach John Giordano argued the point adamantly, the goal was not allowed. The second period of play ended with the score still tied. The Wolverines didn't waste any time coming into the third period and scored just 42 seconds in, taking a 2-1 lead. Goalie Dyck was far outside the crease, trying to sit on a loose puck, but it got away and Tippett grabbed the puck, netting it into the empty cage. The Wolverines were able to hold the Soo Lakers scoreless for the remaining 19:18 of the game, thus avenging Friday night's loss with a well- deserved 2-1 win. "Tonight's game was tougher than last night's physically," said Giordano. "The defense played a little better tonight, so they're coming along. The main difference was we won."
