By MIKE MCGRAW
Now's the time to make the move.
Not only is the Michigan hockey team
out of last place in the CCHA, but its op-
ponent this weekend is the team that
replaced the Wolverine s on the bottom.
Back-to- back victories over Ferris
State in Yost Ice Arena could propel the
icers on their way to CCHA playoff con-
tention.
The only question is, which Michigan
team will take the ice tonight? Will it be
the team that looked so miserable last
Friday in front of the home crowd - the
team that let in 10 Western Michigan
goals? Or will it be the team that
skated into Kalamazoo the following
night and shut the Broncos down, 2-1?
"WE TOOK the body a lot better on
Saturday, that was the big difference,"

said Michigan head coach John Gior-
dano. "Ferris is going to be big and is
going to be tough. It'll be a very tough
series. We'll goi with the same lineup
we had on Saturday, but I don't know
who'll start in goal."
Ferris State holds a 6-9-1 record
overall and 3-8-1 ,in the conference,
coming off a double defeat to Illinois-
Chicago. The Bulldogs are led in
scoring by senior Tom Rudrud (10
goals, 10 assists), junior Randy
Merrifield (10, 9), and two-time team
most valuable player Paul Cook (6,10).
On defense, FSU has first-team all-
CCHA Jim File (12 assists).
But first-year head coach Dick Ber-
trand feels his team is not ready to
compete with the rest of the league.
"We have no key players, no one the

opposing team has to worry about,"
said Bertrand. "We've had no
recruiting the past two years and we're
paying the price.
"THIS IS the low point of the season
for us," he continued. "We don't have
any dominant line or any standouts on
defense. A team that faces us doesn't
have any strengths to concentrate on.

"But the kids haven't given up,'
there's not a bad attitude on the team.
They still play every game to win.,
While John's (Michigan coach John
Giordano) team is improving every
week, we're on a plateau."
Bertrand had more good things to say
about the Wolverines. "Down the road
they will definitely make their presence
felt," he remarked. "(Chris) Seychel is
a natural scorer and he has the ability
to give the team a lift at any time."
BEFORE COMING to Big Rapids
this year, Bertrand had spent 12
seasons at Cornell, where he compiled a
229-104-9 record. "I knew what I was
getting into when I came here," said
the coach. "The CCHA is going to be
the premier conference in the country
in a couple of years." I'm not surprised
at anything I've found here, although I
thought we were a little more talented
than we actually are.
"The name of the game is get the puck
into the net, we're not doing that and
that's why we're in last place."
So Ferris State is coming to town in
the midst of a major rebuilding
program. This could provide for an ap
petizing matchup for the Wolverine
icers after a murderous schedule this
first half of the season. That is
provided the right team shows up.
This weekend's games with Ferris
State at Yost Ice Arena begin at
7:30. Tickets are available at the
door or at the Athletic Ticket Office
on the corner of State and Hoover.
Both games will be broadcast over
WJJX radio (650 AM). Air time is
7:15 p.m. On December 28 and 29,
the icers invade Joe Louis Arena in
Detroit for the Great Lakes In-
vitational Tournament. Michigan
takes on Michigan State on Tuesday
at 5:00 p.m. In the second game that
evening, Notre Dame battles
Michigan Tech. The final round is
the next night at 5:00 p.m.
