administration asill has not acted of-
ficially on that recommendation.
Supporters of he rewording, Rice
said, felt the guidelines passed in April
were too restrictive.
Medical Prof. Dniel Ringler of the
RPC said a number)f votes were taken
before the committee agreed n the final
wording. "We found t difficult to come
to a one-or two-senteyce principle that
would cover all the ventualities,"he
said.
"MANY amendment were offered.
Some were substantialchanges and
some were minor wrding changes,"
Ringler said.
The next step befor the committee
bring the proposal to tie faculty senate
for final approval, he laid, will be to
work out its enforcemen mechanisms.

"As I see it at the present time, it will
consist of a committee of faculty and
students evaluating any and all resear-
ch grants, contracts, etc.," he said.=.
ROGER KERSON, who is investiga-
ting military research on campus for
the Michigan Student Assembly, said
he doesn't think the research policy
needs to be changed.
"What we need is to have the current
policy enforced more strictly . . . and
enforced in an effective manner," hte
said.
Kerson said he objects to the phrase
"primary purpose."
"Is it primary in terms of what the
researchers say or in terms of what thie
agency that's funding the researdh
says?" Kerson asked.

Chrysler, UAW reach pact

;r

(Continued from Page 1)
Canadian UAW Direror Robert
White refused to reveal dfails of the
Chrysler pact with autoworers in that
country. The settlement Name with
Fraser and Chrysler Ccp. Vice
President Thomas Miner pesent at
Canadian talks.
About 4,600 U.S. Chrysler workes were
laid off because of parts shortage from
the Canadian strike, and they prbably
will return two or three days nfter
Canadian plants resume operion,
Miner said.
"When the details are released, I th it
wil become readily apparent that lte
parties have used some ingenuit:,"

said Miner, who allowed that "we set-
tled at a different place then we star-
ted."
"The contracts will be different:
We have indicated that the Canadian
agreement would realize that the
Canadian inflation rate is double that of4
the U.S. so it will be different in th4t
respect," said Miner.
U.S. autoworkers had made three
sets of concessions to the automaker to
enable the firm to receive the $1,5
billion in loan guarantees from the
American government. Under the loan
provisions, Chrysler must submit any
contracts to the board for approval.
