The Michigan Daily-Friday, December 10, 1982-Page 3 Group protests Soviet appearance at Crisler By BILL HANSON A group of about ten people braved last night's frigid temperatures and gathered outside Crisler Arena-the site of the USSR-Michigan men's gym- nastics exhibition-to protest human rights violations in the Soviet Union. "We're here to protest the internment of Soviet Jews and others who want to live their lives in freedom," group spokesperson Jerry Rogers of South- field said. ROGERS SAID the group was spon- sored by the Detroit Soviet Jewry Committee of the Jewish Community Council, and the campus Chabad House. The protesters, who gathered at the top of steps at Crisler's Stadium Boulevard entrance, handed out literature to entering spectators and waved signs with slogans such as, "Ex- port Jews not vodka." Much of the literature pertained to dissident Anatoly Shcharansky, a Soviet Jew imprisoned in 1978 for "espionage'' and "anti-Soviet agitation." HE HAS reportedly been on a self im- posed hunger strike since Sept. 26 and is considered to be close to death. BESIDES calling attention to the plight of Shcharansky, Rogers said his group wanted to make an impression on the visiting Soviet gymnasts - many of whom are KGB members, Rogers said. When the gymnasts return to the Soviet Union, Rogers said, they are debriefed by government officials. It is important that these Soviet officials know of protests in the United States or else they will "'clamp down even har- der" on Jews, he said. Going Home?
