0 Page 20-Friday, September 10, 1982-The Michigan Daily ROOKIE COACH LECLAIR'S SQUAD OPENSTODA Y Women invade the links 4' V By JESSE BARKIN For rookie women's golf coach Sue LeClair, a wait- and-see attitude is the only kind she could possibly have as the lady linksters open their season today and Satur- day in the Illinois State Invitational at Normal, Ill. LeClair, a Michigan grad and Ann Arbor native, takes over the coaching position that was vacated when Tom Simon retired this summer after five years at the helm of the Wolverines. Simon's retiring in the summer did not give Athletic Director Don Canham much time to look for a replacement, but he quickly decided on LeClair, who has been a member of the Detroit Women's District Golf Association for 34 years. WHEN ASKED what she expects from the team this year, LeClair optimistically replied, "I think the girls are going to have a good time . . . and win some tour- naments." The latter will be decided as the season goes on, but for now LeClair has little way of gauging her team's poten- tial. After all, she has only been active for a week. "I saw them for the first time Tuesday for nine holes," LeClair said, "and they played 18 today (Wed.). The freshmen are very nervous coming to a new school, trying to make a college team with college competition, and everything (that goes with being a freshman)." OF THE THREE returnees, senior Caryn Colbert is expected to be the squad leader. Last season Colbert led the Wolverines in scoring at two of the team's five tour- naments, the Indiana and Spartan Invitationals, and finished in a tie for 27th at the Michigan Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women's Championships with a score of 171. "I only saw her yesterday for nine," said LeClair, "but she's got a beautiful golf swing. I think she'll do well this year." Sandy Barron and Doris Gallo are also ex- pected to add experience and LeClair said she likes what she's seen from them, especially the hard work put in by Barron. "Sandy worked hard on her swing all summer and should do well," predicted LeClair. GOING INTO today's match, LeClair decided to use freshmen Luane Cherney, Julie Fremuth and Jean Schuster to round out the team. Even with the team's inauspicious beginnings, LeClair is very high on her appointment, and said she is serious about improving the women's golf program. "My objec- tive is to bring Michigan's women's golf team up to the same competitive level as other University of Michigan athletic teams. "The golf program hasn't done much yet," she con- tinued, "and I'm hoping to do something about it.
