(171) By RON POLLACK When Michigan and UCLA did battle earlier this season, Bruins' quarter- back Tom Ramsey mercilessly brought the Wolverine defense to its knees. The 6-0, 188-pound senior ravaged the Michigan secondary to the tune of 311 yards and two touchdowns while com- pleting 22 of 37 passes. It was his precision passing, more so than anything else, that allowed UCLA to overcome a 21-0 deficit and triumph, 31- 27. AND THE rest of the season went much the same for Ramsey. He finished the year ranked first nationally in passing efficiency and was named co-Pac Ten Player of the Year with Stanford quarterback John Elway. "I think it was a productive year for me in terms of passing yardage," said Ramsey who completed 191 of 311 passes for 2,824 yards, and 21 touch- downs against only 11 interceptions. "We accomplished a lot by stretching defenses and keeping them off balance. We try to move the ball as much as we can and put points on the board. But that's a universal goal. Fortunately, I had skilled people to work with in the passing game. "We moved the ball all year. We've had a good year offensively. I think we've gained confidence throughout the year.'' IT WAS A year in which Ramsey was completely in control of opposing defenses. Yet, when a Rose Bowl berth was on the line, he was utterly helpless. In UCLA's regular season finale, the Bruins led hated USC, 20-13, when the Trojans scored a touchdown in the waning seconds. Not content to settle for a tie, USC went for a two-point con- -version and the win. "I did a lot of praying and hoping that -our defense could do the job on that play," said Ramsey. WHICH IS exactly what the Bruins' defense did, sacking the USC quarter- back after what seemed to be an eter- nity of time for him to throw. But even as the jubilant UCLA squad rushed onto the field to celebrate its victory, the Bruins looked like anything but con- ference champions. For that to happen, Washington had to lose to hapless Washington State that day and Arizona State had to lose to Arizona the following week. "This probably will be the first bowl game we've played were we'll be a decided underdog," said the- 14-year Michigan head coach. "We won the Big Ten and then lost to Ohio State, so this is also the first Rose Bowl we've played after losing to Ohio State." AND THE loss to the Buckeyes is one that Schembechler finds especially hard to stomach. "We gave that game away," said Bo. "We set them up three times and turned ourselves away. The fact remains, we blew two scoring opportunities that were golden. But if we got out and win the Rose Bowl, it will be a heckuva year." If the Wolverines are to win the Rose Bowl - Bo has won just one of six in his 14 years at Michigan - they must eliminate the mistakes that cost them the Ohio State game and get a solid per- formance from quarterback Steve Smith. SENIOR tailback Lawrence Riks, who led the team with 1,300 yards rushing, and senior flanker Anthony Carter, the team's top receiver with 38 catches, have both been solid, but Smith has been inconsistent all year. In Michigan's three losses to Notre Dame, UCLA and Ohio State, Smith completed just 38 of 86 passes with seven intercep- tions and two touchdowns. The Wolverine defense will have the advantage of having already experien- ced one of Ramsey's aerial assaults, and it will have to do a better job of stopping the Bruins' senior quarter- back if the Wolverines are to give Schembechler his second Rose Bowl win and his third bowl win overall. Senior All-Big Ten strong safety Keith Bostic heads a Wolverine secon- dary that allowed Ramsey 331 yards passing in the game in September. Senior flanker JoJo Townsell also broke loose for seven receptions for 108 yards. The Michigan defensive front shut down the Bruin running attack, holding UCLA to just 41 yards on the ground, but the Wolverines will have to find a way to shut down the Bruin air attack if +Jh1Ev hons to nrPV~a i _ Wolverine-B ruin Rose Bowl trivia quiz answers (Continued from Page 24) 1.
