UCLA 41, Cal State Long Beach 10 Bruins' quarterback Tom Ramsey completed 18 of 31 passes for 286 yards. Receiver JoJo Townsell hauled in four touchdown passes of 48, 32, 18 and 22 yards. The four touch- down receptions tied a Pac Ten single-game record. UCLA 51, Wisconsin 26 Ramsey completed 17 of 24 passes for 260 yards. Midway through the second quarter, Wisconsin trailed 24-0 and had only managed four net yards on its five possessions. UCLA 31, Michigan 27 Mchigan built a 21-0 lead in the first half, but the Bruins came storming back on the golden arm of Ramsey. The senior quarterback completed 22 of 37 passes for 311 yards and two touchdowns. UCLA was far less effective on the ground, as it only gained 41 yards on 44 attempts. UCLA 34, Colorado 6 The highlight of this game came when Ramsey hooked up with flanker Dokie Williams on a 50-yard touchdown strike. Ramsey also scored on a 10-yard run. Freshman John Lee booted a 41-yard field goal. UCLA 24, Arizona 24 Arizona jumped out to a 14-7 lead in the first quarter only to give up two touchdowns which gave UCLA a 21-14 advantage. The Wildcats moved back on top, 24-21, when they booted a field goal with 30 seconds left in the game. But the Bruins weren't dead yet, and they drove 60 yards to set up a 36-yard game-tying field goal by Lee. UCLA 45, Washington State 17 UCLA again trailed early on, this time by a 17-14 count with eight minutes to go in the third quarter. But Townsell then scampered 53 yards on a double reverse to put the Bruins up, 21-17. UCLA then tacked on 24 straight points to turn a once- close game into a rout. UCLA 47, California 31 For the third straight week, UCLA had to come from behind. The Bruins trailed 14-7 when Townsell scored on a 67- yard pass. The score was tied at 31-31 in the third quarter, but UCLA outscored the Golden Bears 16-0 in the fourth quarter. UCLA 40, Oregon 12 The Bruins, pass dependent for most of the year, compiled a season-high 217 yards on the ground. Lee tied a single-game school record by kicking four field goals. Washington 10, UCLA 7 UCLA fell behind, 10-0, with fumbles severely hindering its effort. The Bruins cut the Huskies' lead to 10-7 when Townsell took a Ramsey pass 39 yards for a touchdown. With 1:22 left in the game, UCLA had a first down on the Washington 47- yard line. Four plays only netted four yards, however, and the Huskies took over the ball. UCLA 38, Stanford 35 UCLA led 31-27 when Ramsey hit Cormic Carney with a 51- yard pass to set up the quarterback's five-yard touchdown run. Stanford then narrowed the score to 38-35 on a John Elway touchdown pass to Vincent White. But the Cardinals could not overtake the Bruins. UCLA 20, USC 19 The Bruins' last regular-season game of the year was a thriller. UCLA led 17-10 at the half and 20-10 in the third quar- ter. But them, UCS made a valiant comeback attempt. A 22- yard field goal made thescore 20-13, and with no time left on the clock the Trojans scored on fourth down from one yard out. Rama, v ... 21 touchdown passes .. .'M're b Michigan 20, Wisconsin 9 The Wolverines defeated the Badgers to take their season opener and avenge last year's embarrassing 21-14 loss in Madison. Midway through the final quarter, Michigan held a precarious 13- 9 lead, but Steve Smith squashed Wisconsin's hopes for another upset as he moved into the endzone from six yards out. The junior helmsman had a less productive aerial attack, however, as he misfired two crucial intercep- tions. Notre Dame 23, Michigan 17 The Irish cast a dark shadow over the Wolverines' season, handing them a heart-breaking loss in the first night game ever played in Notre Dame Stadium. Free safety Dave Duerson snagged a key fourth-quarter intercep- tion to preserve the Irish victory. UCLA 31, Michigan 27 Michigan bulldozed to a 21-0 second- uids from ( quarter lead over 12th-ranked UCLA before the Bruins discovered the Wolverine defense's inability to halt a solid passing attack. QuarterbackTom Ramsey lead his team down comeback road, completing 22 of 37 pass attempts for 311 yards and two touchdowns. Michigan 24, Indiana 10 After sinking in two consecutive non- conference matchups, the Wolverines smoothly sailed to their second Big Ten victory, handily defeating the Hoosiers by two touchdowns. Michigan place- kicker Ali Haji-Sheikh nails a 50-yard field goal. Michigan 31, Michigan State 17 Returning to its torm of years past, Michigan whipped past the Spartans to hand its intra-state rivals their fifth consecutive loss of the season. Anthony Carter caught five passes for 123 yards and a touchdown and returned a punt 51 yards to set up another score while set- ting three school and Big Ten records and tying another. Michigan 29, Iowa 7 Last year Iowa severly hampered Michigan's Big Ten title aspirations, and the Wolverines returned the favor leveling the Iowa City boys, 29-7. The win coupled with Illinois' 26-21 loss to Ohio State, left the Wolverines as the, uncontested Big Ten leader. Michigan 49 Northwestern 14 The Wolverine offense carried the ball into the en esx times t first half to leave tif ; tpatime x slow start with an insurmountable 42-0 lead over the Wildcats. Steve Smith played only the first 30 minutes but managed to complete 10 of 12 pass attempts for 203 yards. Michigan 52, Minnesota 14 The Wolverine offense piled up a mind- boggling 566 yards to accumulate their highest point total of the year. With Illinois' 14-13 loss to Iowa, the Wolverines now would have to lose two of their remaining games to be denied a Pasadena ticket. Michigan 16, Illinois 10 The Wolverine defense squashed a last-minute Illini fourth-and-goal play on the Michigan two-yard line to cap- ture what has been called by some, the team's most satisfying victory of the season. Michigan 52, Purdue-21 Michigan clinched a Big Ten title and a trip to the Rose Bowl a week early this season with a 52-21 rout of Purdue. An- thony Carter caught two touchdown passes and scored on a two-point con- version to up his career total to 344 points and break Tom Harmon's all- time Michigan record of 337. Ohio State 24, Michigan 14 The Buckeyes stuck a thorn in the Wolverines' Rose Bowl invitation and woalripo the .Holiday bowl with a Memories. That's all Michigan fans will have of flanker Anthony Carter af- ter this season's Rose Bowl. And here is a pretty good memory at that.
