Whereas Michigan captured its Rose Bowl invitation a week early this season, the Bruins received their bid a week late. Three weeks ago the Bruins realized that nothing short of a miracle could lead them to a post-season Pasadena appearance. Not only did UCLA have to win its season finale against intrastate rival USC, but Washington and Arizona had to lose to their state competitors. The Bruins slid past the Trojans, 20- 19, and lowly Washington State blanked the Huskies 24-0 three weeks ago.. The following week Arizona squashed the Sun Devil's chance.to appear for the first time ever in the Rose Bowl with a 28-18 upset. "I guess you could say I believe in them (miracles) now," said Donahue after the Arizona winr. "This is cer- tainly the first one that has ever hap- pened to me." Although New Year's Day won't mark the first time UCLA has appeared in the post-season Big Ten-Pac Ten matchup in Pasadena, the Bruins certainly can M. Tomczak, Ohio St. S. Smith, Michigan .. T. The two teams met last New Year's Eve in the Bluebonnet bowl, where the Bruins were humbled 33-14. UCLA travelled all the way to Ann Arbor to return the favor early this season and came away with a 31-27 fourth-quarter victory. Despite his success in Ann Arbor, Donahue does not under-estimate the capabilities of the Wolverines. "Michigan should be psyched for the game. If our football team is good enough to beat them a second time, that would be quite an accomplishment I think." Whether or not UCLA will attain such an "accomplishment" may depend largely on Michigan's ability to prevent the passing attack of Bruins' offensive MVP Tom Ramsey. In the early-season matchup in Michigan Stadium, the 6-0 188 pounder, completed 22 of 36 pass at- tempts for 311 yards and two touch- downs. Ramsey, who shared Pac Ten player- of-the-year honors with Stanford quar- terback John Elway, completed 191 of 311 pass attempts for 2,824 offensive yards and 21 touchdowns this season. Ramsey will be able to choose from receivers Cormac Carney and Jojo Townsell. Carney, 5-11, 196-pounds, led the Bruins in receptions this year with 44 catches for 746 yards'and two touch- downs. Split End Townsell, who leads the Bruins in scoring with 10 touch- downs, has caught 37 passes for 673 yards., The Bruin's defensive strengths are centered in their secondary led by safety Tom Sullivan and cornerback Lupe Sanchez. Freshman place kicker John Lee, who was named to the second-team All- Big Ten should come through with some extra points. If Schembechler's pass defense has not improved from what is was earlier in the season against UCLA, it might not take a miracle for Donahue to win his first Rose Bowl.
