Founded three years ago by four University of Michigan students for the purpose of a one-shot, live comedy show, the Funnies' members write, direct, produce, and perform all their own material, which traverses the range from satire to "human comedy" to the absurd. The current Sunday Funnies incan- tation consists of fourteen people, a mi'xture of new members and old, some of which in the latter category have switched to more technical positions, such as associate director or producer. This is indicative of the group's willingness to allow each member the freedom to write or direct as well as act. Depending on the material at hand, it can be a boon or a detriment to the Funnies. Their Michigan Theatre show began with a sequence wherein the nine prominently-featured performers sat in' chairs on stage, with the Sunday color comics section obscuring their faces. Each member proceeded to reveal themselves by lowering the newspapers and discussing a relevant topic-such as why Dennis the Menace hasn't aged in over twenty years-with another member or two. Approximately the first half of act one ran too slowly, for a variety of reasons. The pacing was rather awk- ward, due to the writing in the first six sketches. The first one dealt with the old marriage counselor routine where a bickering couple come for help from a model husband and wife team who ap- parently are the picture of bliss and compatibility. By the end, the roles are reversed, with the counselors fighting and the other couple looking on in amazement. The trouble with this sketch-and the five following it-is that the actors had to struggle with hackneyed material and a lukewarm response by the audience. Not to say they weren't fun- ny-for the most part, they were-but it took a short grace period for the Fun-, nies crew to get into the spirit of the things and really hook the audience. This occurred when cast member Rich Schmidt came out in trenchcoat and hat to portray a Sam Spade-styled detective in a mostly monologuical sketch called "The Large Nap" (sic.). Instead of milking the idea for all it's worth, Schmidt underplayed the role, which far greater enhanced the comedic potential of the situation. From that point onward, the rest of act one mored. Larry Bell was out- standing as a Greek tailor in the "Altered States" parody, "Altered Pants." He played his part vigorously and elicited many well-deserved laughs. The script, by director David Saling, was also one of the most cohesive and original contributions to the show. Act two began on a strong note with "The Sub Set," about the first luxury submarine for tourism. Mark Whit- ney's buoyant portrayal of the captain who keeps slipping uncontrollably into "pirate dialect" was easily the highlight of "Set," especially con- sidering the way that it decayed down to an absolutely pointless and unfunny conclusion. Unfortunately, the rest of the second act was largely hit and miss. Although there were no out-and-out failures, it fluctuated between high-energy absur- dity ("The Wedding," with Whitney as a confused groom and Alice Gleason as an enthusiastic, camera-happy witness the standouts), fast-pased plays-on- words ("Bubble Gum Box Office," a weird mixture of underagers sneaking into an X-rated film and their encounter with theatre security), weak social commentary ("Hard Cell"), old routines (the bothersome stranger on the train in "The Commuter"), and musical comedy ("Autumn Amour"). There was, however, one particularly funny piece called "Up the Fjord Without a Paddle" which parodied Ingmar Bergman films, Japanese monster movies, and University film societies all in one. Of all the sketches the Funnies put on Saturday evening, this one benefited the most from its inordinate length Daniel Kimm's hyper-active role as character straight from your favorite Godzilla movie (pick one) kept the audience in stitches and was the final "up" moment in the program. It's nice to know that Ann Arbor has a group like the Sunday Funnies. They obviously have it in them to put on a funny show, as their Michigan Theatre gig displayed, they just don't take any chances. . The Sunday Funnies are enough to please mom and dad, but their actual test will come when they decide to really try something dif- ferent.
