The Michigan Daily SPORTS Friday, December 3, 1982 Western Page 12 ,: .; tCi 0y TAM BENTLEY , his weekend the Wolverine icers will try to begin the long climb out of the clfr of the CCHA by attempting to dig1iuer the Broncos of Western D i igan. _A sweep of the series would do the Michigan squad a world of good as its last two series, against Northern Mjdhigan and Ohio State, have been one gome splits. If history is any indication, Michigan does have a good chance of beating the Broncos as the Wolverines all-time record against Western stands at, 5-0-1. Last season the Wolverines were able to down the Broncos 4-3 in Yist and take a 3-3 tie in the series' sekond game in Kalamazoo. But this year, Western has a few tricks up its sleeves. ONE OF those tricks is right winger Bob Bailey, whose scoring is marked by six goals and seven assists, bringing him to a total of 13 points. Bronco cen- ter Jim Grillo is close behind with six goals and six assists for 12 points and ers await teammate Lance Johnston, also a cen- ter, has five goals and seven assists, marking another 12-point total. One problem the Bronco squad will face is the absence of veteran goalie Glenn Healy. Healy will not dress for tonight's game at Yost because he missed the team's curfew last Friday night after the Denver-Western mat- chup. Tending the net instead will be Steve Abbott, who has played four games thus far this season. The disad- vantage comes in the fact that Healy has a 4-6 record and posts a 3.67 goals against average while Abbott's record is 1-3 with a 6.5 goals against average. Michigan goalie Jon Elliott, who will be starting tonight's game in the net against Western according to Michigan coach John Giordano, displays a 6.26 goals against average: "THIS IS a key series, for us," said Western coach Bill Wilkinson. "We're getting back into league play, and we can put ourselves in a good position heading into the Christmas break with some big wins in the next three weeks. We need to play solid hockey in these next three series." Last weekend, Western did not play very solid hockey against non- conference Denver, however, as the Broncos went down in defeat both nights with scores of 5-1 and 10-4. "The series was a good experience for us. It will improve us," said Wilkin- son of the losses to Denver. "But we have got to cut down on our tendency to give up the puck in our own end." Michigan Hockey Statistics The Wolverines will be ready, though, if the Broncos continue to give up the puck, as freshman Chris Seychel boasts 17 goals and 15 assists, adding up to a total of 32 points. Teammate co- captains Ted Speers and Brad Tippett have also performed well offensively with 9 goals and 22 assists for a total of 31 points and 9 goals 18 assists for 27 points, respectively. Giordano sees the Western defense as the biggest problem his icers will have to deal with in the matchup. "They have a good defense, they're big and strong and tough," Giordano said. When asked if his Michigan squad could overcome this apparent obstacle he remarked "we'd better if we want to win." Individual i BILLBOARD 1 Live for God and His People as a ... a what? Selman, whose decision surprised the Soo Laker players and athletic department, is- leaving the post on January 1to accept a job with the Anheuser-Busch Corporation. Selman joined Lake Superior in March of 1981, and has helped turn the program around. After three consecutive losing seasons, the Lakers were 19-17-3 under Selman last year. The team is off to a 3-7 start in 1982, but Selman said that the team's record has nothing to do with his decision. THE TWO decisions we had to make were whether to ,a s L a k e take the job in St. Louis and whether to leave the team during the middle of the season," said Selman, who becomes assistant sports marketing manager for the f 10 or 20 years, and this is a better decision'for my family." Selman The Lake Superior coach was rumored to be the leading candidate to replace Bud Cooper, the school's athletic director, who is planning to retire in two years. Now, however, the decision has been delayed and the top chockeyjob falls to first-year assistant coach Frank Anzalone, who will serve through the end of the season, when a permanent coach will be hired. "I could have been the athletic director here," said Selman. "What I've chosen to do is administer athletics on a corporate level rather than a college level. "The players understand the opportunity that I have," he added. "They have ac- cepted Frank Anzalone, and I think that the program will continue to expand and improve with Frank as the coach." NORTHWESTERN ended an NCAA record losing streak of 34 games with a victory over Northern Illinois. The Wildcats then closed a 38-game Big Ten losing streak with a triumph over Min- nesota and ended the season with a vic- tory at Michigan State, snapping a 46- game winless streak on the road. Green received 102 first-place votes and a total of 448 points to finish well ahead of Hayden Fry of Iowa who had 60 firsts and 352 points. Mike White of Illinois was third with 24 firsts and 188 points. Bo Schembechler of Michigan's Big Ten champions was fourth with 162 points followed by Earle Bruce of Ohio State with 102 points. >pcoachl.
