He argued, however, with the contention that he never won the crown before. "We won three national championships-1968, 1969 and.. 1973. We just got voted out of them," he said. OFFICIALLY, Penn State finished second in 1968 and 1969 and fifth in 1973 despite perfect records each season. Paterno took off a bulky ring and displayed it. "They say you only get a ring when you win the national championship," he said. "In '73, I hadE my own ring made and gave it to the squad." A VICTORY over 11-0 Georgia on , Jan. 1 would most likely bring his team the undisputed title at last. But so would the method Paterno said he prefers-play-offs.a "I'VE ALWAYS been for play-offs," he said. "I , know Mickey Holmes (Sugar Bowl executive direc- tor) and those guys don't like to hear that." But Paterno's proposal would preserve at least part of the bowl struc- ture. "I've always felt that after the bowls are over, you could come out with four teams and play semifinals and finals." Wa That would result in 14-game seasons for the two finalists and 13-game seasons for the two teams that bowed in the semifinals. HIS CONCERNS yesterday were more immediate and less theoretical than that, though. He talked about Georgia and running back Herschel Walker. "Obviously, they have one of the greatest football players who ever lived in Herschel Walker," he said. He admitted that he has not yet sat down to study film of Georgia, so he hasn't seen anything but game highlights of Walker's abilities. "I GET very nervous when I see those film clips of Georgia. I never see him get tackled," Paterno said. If Walker isn't a shoo-in for the Heisman Trophy, then Penn State quar- terback Todd Blackledge has to be con- sidered a strong candidate, he said. Any mention of Stanford quarterback John Elway must open the door for Blackledge, Paterno claimed. "I have not seen Elway very much. I think our kid, Blackledge, probably does as much as he does, if you're going to talk quarterbacks," he said.- Blackledge has won more games against tougher opponents than Elway has, he said. "Based on performance and what he means to our football team and theG schedule we played, I'd take my kid." The most praised and loved ro- mantic film of the season. Morgan State is 1-2. EWING, THE Big East Conference Rookie of the Year last year, scored 19 points and grabbed 11 rebounds as he showed no after effects of the arch in- jury that limited his playing time in Georgetown's two opening victories in Hawaii. Morgan State's Yarharbrough Roberts led the losers with 18 points. WITH EWING dominating play at both ends of the court, the Hoyas were never headed after opening a 45-26 lead at intermission. The young Hoyas - Co'ach John Thompson starts two freshman and three sophomores - started slowly against the Bears. But with the score tied 6-6 four minutes into the game, their overall quckness and height ad- vantage began to take its toll as the Hoyas outscored the Bears 16-6 to take a 22-12 lead with 9:35 remaining. On offense, Ewing accounted for five of the 16 Hoya points. On defense, he blocked three Morgan State shots and forced Bear shooters to alter the arc on at least three others. With the Hoyas ahead 29-18, Ewing scored on three straight trips down the court. He then stole a pass and was credited with an assist as he fed Michael Jackson for a layup and a 37-18 Georgetown lead with 3:22 remaining in the half. N.
