Actually, Cub is a little brighter than his definition seems to imply. Here is a man who spent the latter part of the seventies with a Detroit hard rock band (Brownesville Station) responsible for a pre-punk hit entitled "Smokin' in the Boys Room" that paid the bills and mortgage for about six long years. His past record seems blemished, but he's proud of it and and anxious to pursue different rock 'n' roll goals. For the past three years he has been playing electric blues with a style and sound that closely resembles Dave Edmunds and George Thorogood. His records thus far, an album and an EP, have been highly acclaimed and his just-released sequel seems about as promising. Playing with the late Hound Dog Taylor's Houserockers, the stage show is dynamic, full of diversity, and generally rowdy and electrifying. He currently stands in the forefront of the recent "roots rock revival" and his en- tourage of dedicated devotees is rapidly increasing. Cub Koda as a normal human being is quite an interesting person. He writes sporadically for Goldmine magazine, a publication directed at record collectors and his fine mixture of crude human and exasperating wit add spice to the popular column. The Rolling Stone Book of Lists includes his 10 rules of rock 'n' roll; his recent releases prove that he makes no infractions on these rules when he performs. Historical documents in variou$ music mags scattered about the nation serve as proof that nobody has ever walked out of a Cub Koda show unhappy or unimpressed. He appears at Rick's tonight and early scouting reports iri- dicate that the bar will definitely be blazing with action and excitement. Thorogood fans are given special en- couragement to attend. After injuring a girl in a hit-8nd-run accident, Records Cub Koda and I 'l' Houserockers-'It's the Blues!' (Baron Records) "We're just gonna do this to check some sound, like . . ." says Cub Koda (homegrown Michigan farmboy; Brownsville Station, Cub Koda and the Points). And in a reply from the deepest darkest blues alleys of Chicago, The Houserockers (the late Hound Dog Taylor's band, along with Lefty Dizz, Left Hand Frank, and Mudcat Ward playing bass) serve up Cub with a fine rockin' blues album. The "sound check" became volume one, so there's more to come, and It's the Blues. Cute way to begin an entertaining work. Cub Koda has always been interested in blues, roots rock and rockabilly, and it looks like now he's doing what he really wants to do. It sounds like now he's doing what he really wants; everybody on this album is having a good time. A genuine sincere good time and not another big rock . star ("Smoking in the Boy's Room" hit number one) doing the "hey, everybody, now I am a great and soulful blues singer" act. And while it's true blues, it's also a tribute. Hound Dog Taylor and Howlin' Wolf are the dedicatees, but the working-so-hard Mr. Koda is paying tribute to the music itself just as much. Hound Dog's Houserockers and Koda do covers of Howlin' Wolf, Junior Parker, Jimmy Reed and others. It is the blues. Koda's vocals are raw down and dif- ty; he shouts and growls and it's won- derful. The band is hot, full of proven blues men having a good time. "C'mon, let's do some more, let's do some more, we've got the brew.. ." Side one's best offering is J.B. Lenoir's "Mamma Talk to Your Daughter," a quick blues shout number with Koda and Brewer Phillips doing the words. So much energy it has to stop after two minutes. More favorites on the other side. "Tough Times" is a rough lament over the current economic state with a ban- shee wailing guitar thoughtfully provided by Lefty Dizz. "Bright Lights Big City" is a sweet, short "everybody sings" song that does a lot to enhance our "bunch of caring musicians enr joying each other's company" image of this album being recorded in one sit- ting. (That's just an ,impression, not necessarily the truth.) It's the Blues even has a novelty song (surprisingly tolerable). "The Dirty Duck Blues" tells the poignant story of a '54 Gibson guitar carryin' duck in a three-piece polyester suit that sits in one night at a blues club in Chicago. The duck sings B.B. King's "Sweet Six- teen." Koda seems to like this kind of thing a lot; anybody remember "Mar- tian Boogie"? Koda is serious about the blues; with current times being what they are, who's to say a white boy from southern Michigan shouldn't be singin' the blues e- -Joe Hoppe 1Cable Key CABLE FCC NUMBER NUMBER CALL NETWORK LETTERS AFFILIATE POINT OF ORIGINATION S S a S S ID LEb MJ (58) (621 WJBK WIHT WDIv WXYZ HBO WTVS WAPR CBS IND NBC ABC PBS IND Detroit Ann Arbor Detroit Detroit New York Detroit Detroit ____. _---- -.-Y-a f= I a T: ---- - -
