'R' 10:30 m HBO VIDEO JUKEBOX O ED 0COLLEGE FOOTBALL Iowa vs. MSU (Continued from Page 1) Administrators have argued that the quality of the institute was "questionable," that the unit has been unable to establish cooperative relationships with other research units, and that serious losses in research grants and aid make recovery of the in- stitute unlikely. Grossman refused to discuss the closing after the meeting. ALTHOUGH all the Regents endor- sed the elimination, several had con- cerns about the University's commit- ment to the study of mental retar- dation. "There is a population of citizens who do sutler from mental retardation," said Regent Thomas Roach (D- Saline). "There are people who need service, and who need treatment- we should be training people for this. Just because we stopped this responsibility by closing ISMRRD doesn't end our commitment." Regent Nellie Varner (D-Detroit) said it "appears there is a problem with a deep commitment" in the area of mental retardation. BECAUSE the institute is one of the few units of its kind in the state, Roach urged University administrators to cooperate with any other school that Molecular, ge might want to set up a similar program. "I would hope if some other univer- sity in the state wished to start Ia program we would give great cooperation in helping them transfer reseach grants and so forth," Roach said. The unit will be closed June 30, 1983. Faculty members in the institute will be reassigned to other departments in the University by then. IN ADDITION to the $228,000 savings to the General Fund budget, the University's main coffer, there will be undetermined savings from vacating the building the institute is housed i, and from not replacing the salaries-f0 the institute's staff members when they retire, Frye said. The Regents yesterday also agreed to ask for more than $43 million in aid from the state for the next academic year. Approval of the request is the first step in the lengthy process of applying for funds from the state. 4 Nearly $28 million of that money i to catch University funding up with thesn- flatio i4h d dto lation rate and to hold down tuiton costs next fall. The remaining $25 million is to make up for "deficits" he University has compiled because: of steadily declining state aid, Frye said. netics centr wins Regent's approval (Continued from Page 1) "Thurnau Funds," a donation made in 1981 specifically for genetic research. ADMINISTRATORS said the Univer- sity is still working out the center's relationship with a similar genetics center established by the state at Michigan State University. It's possible Ann Arbor's center will concentrate on an area of research called protein sythesis, while the MSU center will specialize in other areas to avoid duplication of research, Shaoro said. He said that protein synthesis v'ill likely become "the most important and useful aspect (of genetics research to the state." Shapiro said administrators at the center were cooperating with MSU' in every way possible. "Our colleagues here have bent over backwards to achieve some sort of a cooperation with MSU in order to play some role in the statewide effort (in genetic research)," he said. kCable Key s CABLE 'FCC NUMBER NUMBER CALL NETWORK LETTERS AFFILIATE POINT OF ORIGINATION i x Q ED m3 (56) (62) WJBK WIHT WDIV WXYZ HBO WTVS WGPR CBS IND NBC ABC PBS IND Detroit Ann Arbor Detroit Detroit New York Detroit Detroit PUT'E 4 AWAY I I 1 I I I d
