TURNLEY; Photographer They will speak on MONDAY. NOVEMBER22 at 4:00 P.M. in the EAST CONFERENCE ROOM of the RACKHAM BUILDING Larsen looks to Natonasls By MIKE MCGRAW Cross country runner Lisa Larsen was sitting by the whirlpool before practice this week as she and the rest of the Michigan women's cross country team prepared to run in the national meet this Monday in Bloomington, In- diana. It was ironic that she would be in the water at this time because Larsen spent most of her athletic life in the pool before deciding to become a cross coun- try runner. Larsen came to Michigan as a fresh- woman and competed with the swim- ming team for a year before she grew tired of the sport. "I couldn't motivate myself any more in swimming, but I still wanted to compete, so I started ' '5 . K, r,. : i FULL SERVICE PHOTO LAB 0 running," Larsen said. SINCE GIVING up swimming to con- centrate on running, Larsen, in addition to having success in indoor and outdoor track, has become Michigan's first woman cross country All-American, taking 14th at nationals last year in Pocatello, Idaho. This year she took second in the Big Ten, the top finish for a Michigan runner in that event as well. "I do well in the big races because there's something about them that give sme more adrenalin, I just go nuts," said Larsen. "We gear toward the big races all year, so when they come around we're ready for them." The next big race for Larsen and the harriers is this Monday when the Wolverine women will run in the nationals for the first time as a team. They have not seen Indiana Univer- sity's course yet, which could be a disadvantage but they will be led by a runner who has national experience. "IT WILL be a help having run in nationals before, you get a chance to see how the top runners react in a race," said Larsen. "It's like the foot- ball team only plays a team like Washington once a year, and if they have played them before, it helps a lot. It's a lot like that in cross country." Larsen may have had experience racing on a national level, but overall, she hasn't competed as much as most other collegiate runners. "I haven't been running as long as most runners but I think that could have an advan- tage," she said. "Not having run for all my life, I have saved some of the stress on my legs and may be in better. shape physically than I would be." "Since Lisa hasn't been running for as long as some of the other runners, she is improving much faster," said coach Francie Kraker-Goodridge. "It should help our younger runners a lot having some experienced leadership for the big races." RIGHT ALONG side Larsen all year for the harriers has been senior Melanie Weaver, who finished fifth in Big Tens and seventh at districts. Weaver adds to Michigan's experience for the harrier's title run. Rounding our the top five are freshman Sue Schroader, senior Sue Frederick- Foster, and Judy Yuhn. BILLBOARD The women's basketball team is looking for volunteers to fill a number of positions. Anyone interested in being a scorekeeoer, timekeeper, or statistician should contact head coach Gloria Soluk before Friday at the Women's Athletic Department. The number to call if 763-2159. "I think its realy good that we're going as a team this year, before it was just individuals," added Larsen. "Now we're a team and can help each other out." This first trip to nationals should be more than just an appearance in a top event, as Michigan has a legitimate chance at high honors. "Virginia is the defending champion and after them I see Stanford, Oregon, Clemson, and Tennessee as being some of the top competition," said Goodridge. "Con- servatively, I would say we should finish in the top ten as a team and sixth place is a good possibility. The whole team is really healthy this week." Larsen thinks that the Wolverines may even have an advantage on some of the other teams. "A LOT OF the good teams at nationals won't be used to running on hills and in the cold," said Larsen. "We've had some experience running some tough courses like at Iowa for Big Tens, and a lot of the southern schools haven't." Goodridge agrees. "We don't have to travel as far for this meet and we're used to running in cold weather, and I think this will help make up the gap that exists between us and some of the better shcools," said Goodridge. Because of the limited budget given r the team, the harriers have never had,; to travel very far. But with their per- formance this season, the program is-, starting to improve. Next year, Goodridge is hoping to add some home meets and a trip to California for the,.> runners. The national competition~,~ should help Michigan's recruiting so the Wolverine women's cross country,.. team looks like it could be on top for some time. As for Larsen, she doesn't have any,,, regrets about shifting sports in mid->7 career. "If I had stayed a swimmer IQ would be retired right now," she added, "The hardest transition has been thinking of myself as a runner instead of a swimmer. But I'm starting to han-, dle it. I used to have nightmares about swimming all the time, but those have. stopepd. Now my dreams are aboutv running." So now after coming further than any v _ Michigan woman runner, Larsen doesn't have to worry too much about ,, her performance Monday in Indiana. Because even if she doesn't become a-., repeat All-American, she won't be in any hot water. iV Sb 1 i Precision Photographics, 830 Phoenix Drive Ann Arbor, MI Phone (313) 971-9100 inc. 48104 ............ .. .
