The Michigan Daily cers host Buckeyes 'ORTS Friday, November 19, 1982 9 Page 11 Michigan Hockey Statistics By MIKE MCGRAW When the Michigan football team travels to Columbus tomorrow to take on: Ohio State, it doesn't have to win because it has already wrapped up the Big Ten championship. But is is just eopposite for the Michigan hockey mn which hosts the Buckeyes tonight and tomorrow night at Yost Ice Arena. The icers find themselves at the bot- tom of the Central Collegiate Hockey Association standings with a 1-7 mark and if they don't get on track soon, they could find themselves in a hole that would be tough to get out of. THE BUCKEYES have gotten off to a somewhat better start than some CCHA observers had expected with a 4-3-1 cord, including two wins over peren- nial conference powerhouse Michigan Tech. But head coach Jerry Welsh is used to the lack of respect that his team gets. "We've been in this conference a long time and in past years finished second several times in a row when we were pickef for fifth and sixth place," said Welsh. "So I'm used to this." WELSH HAS learned from his own experience and as a result refused to take the 1-7 Michigan team lightly. "None of our players expect to have easy games this weekend at all," said Welsh. "Michigan is definitely not a 1-7 team, they've played a very tough schedule." Ohio State will feature high scoring forwards Dave Kobryn (3 goals, 15 assists) and captain Paul Pooley (9,8). Pooley and Kobryn will team up with junior Andy Browne to form one of OSU's lines. But Welsh says his line of Kevin Burden, Ottawa, Ont. native Gord Rivington, and senior Don Stolt- zner is performing the best right now. The Buckeye defense is led by senior Mike Farley of South Bend, Ind. and Jamies Macoun (10 assists) with John Dougan in the nets. Dougan was CCHA player-of-the-week earlier this year when the Buckeyes swept Michigan Tech with bougan getting a 3-0 shutout in the process. THERE IS no question that this weekend's games are very important for Michigan, as it currently is in a six game losing streak. All of those losses have come at the hands of the top three teams in conference - Bowling Green, Michigan State, and Michigan Tech. Only one of those games has been at home. And next week it gets no easier as Northern Michigan, which twice defeated MSU on the road last week, comes into Yost over Thanksgiving break. The Wolverines will be without the services of defenseman Dave McIn- tyre, who was injured this week. But other than that Michigan coach John Giordano plans no changes for the coming games. The Michigan-Ohio State hockey games tonight and tomorrow night at Yost Ice Arena begin at 7:30. Tickets will be available at the door and at the Athletic Ticket Office on the corner of State and Hoover. Both games will be broadcast on WJJX- AM (650) radio. Name, Pos. C. Seychel, LW ...... T.
