Brezhnev disappears
from Soviet media

I

MOSCOW (UPI) - Only two days af-
ter his grandiose state funeral, the late
President Leonid Brezhnev all but
disappeared from the Soviet media
yesterday and new boss Yuri Andropov
was clearly in charge..
A fter near-saturation coverage of
Brezhnev's funeral Monday, this image
was fading in official meddia.
WHILE Brezhnev portraits still hung
in offices where they have been for
years, all indications of mourning
vanished. Flags were at full staff and
all touches of black were gone.
Analysts said the developments did
not signal a bid to discredit Brezhnev,
but were simply signs the Soviet Union

was returning to business as usual.
They said Brezhnev almost certainly,
will receive better treatment in the of-
ficial media than Josef Stalin or Nikita;
Krushchev - who are never men-
tioned.

6

The lead editorial on the front page of
Pravda, official organ of the Com-
munist Party, exhorted the nation to
prepare for the Dec. 30 celebrations
marking the 60th anniversary of the
Soviet Union.
Andropov, appointed Communist
Party general secretary two days after
Brezhnev died last week at age 75, was 6
shown at the Kremlin receiving various
foreign dignitaries, including Cuba's
Fidel Castro.

WASHINGTON (AP) - The Reagan
administration tangled head-on yester-
day with the nation's Roman Catholic
bishops about their projected condem-
nation of U.S. nuclear strategy, but the
bishops were standing their ground.
Several of them said they saw no
likelihood of Whtie House pressure
causing them to back away from their
convictions.
WHILE welcoming the ad-
ministration's letter of objections, Car-
dinal John Krol of Philadelphia com-
mented, "They're saying what they
think and we're going to say what we
think."
Copies of the seven-page White House
letter, signed by national security ad-
viser William Clark but expressly

speaking for President Reagan and
other top officials, landed in a heap of
brown envelopes at the bishops'
meeting.
One was addressed to each of the 28J
participants in the National conferenc
of Catholic Bishops, which is weighing
pastoral letter denouncing nuclear war
fare and some aspects of U.S. strategy.
THE WHITE House accused the
bishops of "fundamental misreading
of American policies" and of ignorin
"far-reaching American proposals" t
negotiate arms reductions with th
Soviet Union.
Bishop Raymond Lucker of New Ulm
Minn., commented, "They say they'v
made the effort, but we're not convin.
ced and it's not enough. It's rhetoric."

Student Locater service
provides student numbers

(Continued from Page 3)
worked at Michigan Bell before coming
to the University, new operators are
required to go through a 10-day training
period.
"OUR SERVICE is unique because
the various questions a caller has do not
compare with (those received by)
Michigan Bell operators. Their jobs are
routine and pretty cut and dry ... they
are limited to placing long distance or
directory assistance calls," said
Batalucco, who worked for 10 years at
Michigan Bell before coming to the
University in 1962.
But Batalucco admits the job can be
frustrating, especially when callers aren't
clear about just exactly what they
want.

There was a call this year, for instan-
ce, from a young child who knew his
mother worked at the University, but
didn't know in what department. This
made it impossible to find the number
for him, Batalucco said.
ONE STUDENT who worked at6
Locater for six weeks said the eight-
hour shifts were long and miserable.
"I was always counting the minutes.
It was the shittiest job I ever had," he
said. "It is stripped from being
anything personal-the idea is to find
the numbers fast. That's it."
But those operators who have stuck
with the job longer said they find
satisfaction from helping people con-
nect with the needed help or infor- 6
mation.

"Small business trends seem to be
just normal," she said, though she ad-
ded that starting large businesses is
slower because "money is tighter."
Still, several local bankers and
business persons remain pessimistic
about the potential for growth in the
present economy.
"PEOPLE ARE A little shell-

while opening his shop in 1971 was not

tighter lending policy by the Small

many young entrepreneurs today.
"Today it would take a lot of guts to
start a business," he said. "Do you see
all those businesses going bankrupt?
Banks are nervous about that," he said,
