'R' Prof. speaks on hargamm (Continued from Page i) collective bargaining will mean the end of merit salary increases. This, Stone argued, would only happen if the faculty wanted it. "THAT IS something a faculty could bargain for, but it's not a consequence of collective bargaining," he said. According to Stone, the loss of faculty autonomy is also a subjective issue. But, he stressed, the faculty could have as much, or as little involvement in the process as it wants. For example, the faculty could ask a bargaining agent to deal with only certain budgetary mat- ters, he said. Stone said bringing in a bargaining agent provides the faculty with more knowledge in negotiating than faculty members could gain during a short term on a faculty governing body. "COLLECTIVE bargaining results in more expertise being devoted to analysis of budgetary documents," he said. "With professional experience, it's hoped that faculty participation can be more meaningful." There is also the feeling among some faculty that collective bargaining belongs at second rate universities. "I have a feeling that (some faculty mem- bers think) it's alright for the other, less prestigious universities to become unionized but somehow we at the big 'U' think that's beneath us," said Humanities Prof. Robert Weeks. "There's a lot of truth that elitism has coincided with strong faculty in- volvement with governance," Stone said, but "collective bargaining isn't viewed as something needed to fortify the nosition of the faculty." propriations. At a public university, however, collective bargaining would be a means to affect University lob- bying efforts. "In public institutions, the funds come from appropriations by legislation. There, one can hope to af- fect what the governing board is going to ask for," Stone said. NEXT WEEK, faculty at Michigan State University will vote on a proposal to use a collective bargaining agent in negotiations with the administration. The faculty will be able to choose either the AAUP the Faculty Associates group which is connected with the Michigan Education Association,or to not have an agent. Prof. Wilfred Kaplan, president of thd University's AAUP chapter, said he thinks the outcome of the MSU vote will have little effect on the possibility of collective bargaining here. "I would say it remains a possibility," he said, but "the chances are small." KAPLAN SAID that in the past the main reason collective bargaining has been used at other campuses is because of a communicative breakdown bet4 ween faculty and administration. "In any university, there usually has been some real breakdown between the faculty and administration," he said. "There is some unhappiness within the faculty (here) but I don't think it would cause a breakdown." Weeks, also saw little chance of collective bargaining taking place at the University in the ne. hi...a ud Cable Key CABLE FCC CALL NETWORK POINT OF NUMBER NUMBER LETTERS AFFILIATE ORIGINATION AS A (82) 01) (is), WJBK WIHT WDIV WXYZ HBO WTVS WGPR WKBD CBS IND NBC ABC PBS IND IND Detroit Ann Arbor Detroit Detroit New York Detroit Detroit Detroit I nu4 U
