SPORTS -Friday, November 12, 1982 The Michigan Daily Page 11 Elliott, icers hope to repeat upset of Tech '1ky CHUCK JAFFE Myichigan goaltender Jon Elliott has .-rturned to the scene of the crime. .,Last year, in his first two conference' "games as a Wolverine, Elliott shut own Michigan Tech, and Michigan swept the Huskies in Houghton for the first time since 1956. Tonight, when Michigan squares off with the Huskies .t."the Student Ice Arena, Elliott will be ,loking to recapture last year's magic, and Michigan will be trying to break a Jfi r-game losing streak. The Wolverines have a 1-5 record in gl - the CCHA, including losses to top- ranked Michigan State and Bowling Green, while the Huskies boast a 4-2 conference record and are currently ranked eighth in the nation in the WM- PL hockey poll. But the Huskies' rise hasn't been smooth, as they have faced many of the same growing pains as the youthful Wolverines. "We have a lot of new faces on defen- se, and we haven't been getting the production from some of our experien- ced players, but we have done well," said first-year Michigan Tech coach Jim Nahrgang. "I'm very glad that Michigan had to face Bowling Green and Michigan State early in the season instead of us." Michigan Tech is anchored by goaltender Mudge Tompsett, who step- ped in for Ann Arbor native Tom Allen last week and spurred the team to two victories. The Huskies also feature a balanced scoring attack led by juniors Bill Terry and Ron Zuke, and, senior Jeff Wylie. "We feel that they are a usual Michigan Tech team, and will play a hard-hitting kind of game," said Michigan coach John Giordano. "This is a big series because we're in last place. I wouldn't say this is a must game for us, but if we lose two games we'll be 1-7. Seven losses and you almost can't recover. We'll make a run, but it might take until December." But if Michigan plans to make a recovery, it has to start in the goal with the play of Elliott. The sophomore net- minder started the season in a dismal slump, giving up 18 goals in his first two CCHA appearances. Last weekend, however, he returned to the form that made him the 1981-82 CCHA rookie-of- the year, recording 79 saves in two games against Michigan State. "I was having problems with my con- centration and intensity," Elliott said. "(Assistant) Coach (Mike) Turner worked with me, and I've been coming around. When a shot would come in, I would stop watching the puck at a point two or three feet from my body, and I'd move my body to where I thought the puck would be, instead of looking it into my pads or body. I was missing by in- ches. The defense might made a mistake, then I would make a mistake, and then 'Bang!', the puck was in the net." But Elliott has cut down on his mistakes of late, and with the help of Turner and his friends, seems ready to turn his season around and become a team leader. "He didn't let it get him down if he had a bad game," said Paul Kobylarz, Elliott's roommate. "It never got to him, and so now he's putting it together and playing well." No one knows how well Elliott is Action SportsWear FACTORY CLOsEOUTS Swimwear Footwear Bodywear 406 East L iberty 2 0OcS Off State Steet 663-6771 playing more than Michigan Tech's Nahrgang, who has prepared his team to face one of the league's hottest goaltenders. "I told my team that we're facing a hot goaltender, and we'll have to take a lot of shots,' Nahrgang said. "We may need 50 shots just to score three goals. But if you throw enough mud against a wall, some of it has to stick. We'll have to be very offensive-minded and play well, and hope that he has an off-night." But Nahrgang doesn't really expect Elliott and the Wolverines to have an off-night. Instead, he is looking for a hard-fought, well-played series. Anything less would be a crime. Both games of the Michigan- Michigan Tech series will be broad- cast by WJJX 0650 AM) radio. Tonight's game begins at 7:45, and will be simulcast on WCBN (88.3 FM), while tomorrow's game begins at 7:15. Hockey Statistics N B C T D J T P F J K J P M s D D J. T B J. J. M J. B Name, Pos. The Great Plains Open is a two-day event that will pit Michigan wrestlers against wrestlers from other teams and clubs from across the Midwest. The event will give Michigan wrestlers a chance to get some needed experience. "Many of our players need to get their feet wet" said head coach Dale Bahr. WITH ONLY five members returning from last year's 9-7 squad and a majority of freshmen and sophomores, . thteam Bahr takes with him to Lin- workouts," according to Bahr. Flack will start in the middleweight and is sort of the darkhorse of the new recruits. He is considered to have a lot of potential and might be someone to watch as the season progresses. With such a youthful team, a lot will be resting on the shoulders of the five returning veterans. Bahr is counting on the older players for both team leader- ship and personal performance. One of the top returning wrestlers is two time All-American Joe McFarland. He wrestled last year at 118 pounds. When he reported to practice at 145 pounds it was decided that he should wrestle at the 126-pound class, where he is presently ranked number two nationally. McFarland, though, has been suffering from a strained knee and may be red-shirted for the season. Meanwhile, he will wrestle this weekend. Another top returnee is Tim Fagan at 158 pounds, who Bahr is "expecting big things from." . Also returning are the Rechsteiner brothers, Scott and Rob, who will be wrestling at the 167-pound and unlimited weight classes respec- tively. "I expect them both to do well int he league and in the nation," said Bahr. As for the team as a whole, Bahr looks for this year's team to be a good one that "will be great in two years. This is a rebuilding year for sure, but I'm looking for a good season." BILLBOARD There will be a pep rally tonight at the Beta Theta Pi fraternity for tomorrow's Michigan-Purdue football game. The rally, which begins at 7:30 p.m., will feature tri-captains Anthony Carter, Robert Thompson, and Paul Girgash as well as head coach Bo Schembechler. Fagan .. big things expected coln is a young one. --Four key wrestlers - Pat McKay, 1"JjIhn Beljan, Nemir Nadhir, and Big Teen champion Eric Klasson - have *graduated from last year's team, leaving big holes in the Michigan lineup. To fill in at these open positions will be a number of outstanding recruits. Among the new freshman recruits, Bahr singled out three - Tony Latora, Ray Yerekes, and Brian Flack +- as wrestlers with a lot of potential for :this season. Latora was a two-time state of ,X-ichigan champion and will be Wrestling at 134 pounds where big things are expected of him. YERKES WILL be wrestling at 142 pounds, and "has looked tough in early CLASSES NOW FORMING; SEMINARS HELD YERROUND AFRICA WEEK 1982 FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 12 TROTTER HOUSE, 1443 Washtenow AFRICAN ARTS AND CRAFTS EXHIBITION 1-6:30 P.M.
