'R' By Rob Weisberg T HERE AREN'T too many bad things you can say about Tuesday night's Was/Not Was show at the Second Chan- ce. The worst part may have been the choice of songs, only because they were featuring the music from Sweet Pea Atkinson's debut album, a far more conventional - and to my ears less in- teresting - effort than last year's Was/Not Was release. Sweet, Pea may not be God's gift to soul singing, but he made up for whatever vocal shortcomings he has with his ebullient charm. And the singing of Carol Hall, both on the won- derful Bacharach-David duet "Anyone Who had a Heart" on which she and Sweet Pea really hamed it up, and on the incredible funked-up "The Beat Goes On" (which she now has out as a single) may have been the highlight of the show. The band overcame the handicap of not being able to use all those studio tricks their recordings feature through great musicianship, especially on the part of saxman David McMurray and first guitarist Bruce Nazarian, whose excellent solos were placed perfectly within the context of the music. And their stage presence is wonderful. Felix and Jarvis' slick opening rap set things up perfectly; Was/Not Was was going to give us a good-time show. Between the dapper Pea and the hysterically satirical David Was, everything was right, except, maybe, a few of the songs. Don Was, the band's producer (and bass-player on Tuesday) admits that he's not totally happy with the sound of Sweet Pea's album-which he produced and which the band played on. He fears that they may have given in a little too much to record company pressure to produce more conventional music than Was/Not Was' album featured. On the other hand, he wasn't totally happy with the Was/Not Was debut either. Says he, "The thing that bothers me the most about the first album is that I find it really diffuse. There's no - well, there are some threads that hold the whole thing together but musically every song is really different." To allow them to keep the sense of diversity while creating a stronger sen- se of musical continuity, Was says the next record.will have more traditional melodies but even less traditional studio effects than before. In addition, he says, "now that people are developing a way of playing together, we can do two really different types of songs and make them sound similar. After all, Was/Not Was at first wasn't eyen a group. "From what started as bringing these really different characters together and overdubbing one at a time - the first album was just me and one other person sitting there (in the studio( - now there's really a group sound," he says. Juding by last night's performance, it's true. Even without the array of spaceage effects you heard on the album, there ws no denying it Was/Not Was. The next Was/Not Was album, featuring among other luminaries Mit- ch Ryder on lead vocals a couple of times, won't be out for a while. In the meantime, a record backed by the band and produced by Don Was with singer Cristina should be out in a couple of months. She's tryingt to come back from a mediocre debut album under the auspices of August Darnell, putting her faith in Was and Was this time. And there aren't too many bad things you can say about that. Records Various artists-'Casino Lights' (Warner Bros.) Support the March of Dimes, BIRTH DEFECTS FOUNOAU1ON Men's Glee Club to sing at Hill Cable Key All-star albums of this type have a tendency to be uneven, a collage of ar- tists and musical styles used by the label to promote their roster of artists. This one is no exception to that general rule. The musical sytles range from Rhythm and Blues to Jazz-Pop fusion, and Warner Brothers has been thought- ful enough to include a listing of other works by the same artists on the album jacket. The good news is that the quality of the music ranges from being good to the transcendent. The first three songs on the first side-All Jarreau-Randy Crawford duets-are fantastic ballads, the ried evening of highlights of the entire album. Here the lways sure to in- singers harmonize in perfect com- d Blue pepper-up- plement to each other, accompanied by ant to go back to a group of musicians who fulfill every change phrases with each other and the three male back-ups in beautifully in- ventive fashion are all the time given solid but unobtrusive support by Miller, Castro, Lassy Carlton, et al. On the second song, "Who's Right, Who's Wrong," they retain the elemen- ts mentioned before, but introduce a new spirit and urgency to their delivery which crests in the joyous chorus of "Sure enough" their third duet. Side two, which presents the Jazz- Pop fusion side of the aggregation, opens with the improbably-titled "Monmouth College Fight Song," a% fairly funky romp featuring Russel Ferrante's synthesizers over the throb- bing backbeat laid down by Jimmy Haslip's bass and Ricky Lawson's drums. David Sanborn then delivers the theme from "Love is Not Enough" and "Hideaway," which are less notable for the, saxophonist's playing (which is competent, though rather uninspiring), CABLE FCC CALL NETWORK NUMBER NUMBER LETTERS AFFILIATE POINT OF ORIGINATION O (ID am (56) (62) WJBK WIHT WDIV WXYZ HBO WTVS WGPR WKBD CBS IND NBC ABC PBS IND IND Detroit Ann Arbor Detroit Detroit New York Detroit Detroit Detroit THERE IS ONE musical group on campus that performs everything from Gustav Holst to George Gershwin.
