SPORTS _ Tuesday, November 9, 1982 'NEVER SEE ANYONE LIKE HIM AGAIN'-BO The Michigan Daily Page 9 One more home show for Carter rU. , l flt *AtW By RUN POLLACK Like all good things, Anthony Car- ter's college career is coming to an end. Saturday's game against Purdue will mark the last time the swift flanker suits up at Michigan Stadium, an oc- casion Wolverine head coach Bo Schembechler took considerable note of at his weekly press luncheon yesterday. "You'll never see anyone like him again," said Schembechler. "We'll replace him, but it won't be the same. But then again, they said we couldn't replace (Michigan's all-time leading rusher Butch) Woolfolk. You never know, we may get someone who will excite you. He just may not be as good as Anthony." WHICH IS nothing to be ashamed of. During his illustrious college career, Carter has caught 146 passes, hauled in 31 touchdown passes and gained 4,890 all-purpose yards. "I'm glad he came here," said Schembechler in quite an under- statement. "I've enjoyed having him. That doesn't mean I don't get mad at him, I do. But it's hard to stay mad at him." It's not difficult to understand why Schembechler can't stay mad at Car- ter. The angular receiver has his coach. constantly searching for new superlatives, several of which Schem- bechler recited yesterday: 0 "He can do things nonchalantly that are just great." " "Someone told me that (A tscaster) Frank Broyles desci as someone made of barbed takes a hit and gets back up.'' 0 "No matter who he's up ag stands out." " "He's got soft hands. All y receivers have that. And weaves his way through defer he gets the ball." " "Carter's yards per compl around 20 yards (20.9). IN tlemen, that's a lot of yards That's not dunking it downfie he gets the ball, it's 20 yards o down. Now if I were back the make me nervous." * "Other little guys won't g middle. But he will. That's different." BUT THE biggest compli corded Carter comes from n than his peers. "You ever notice the nu receivers who have the nun around the country now,' Schembechler. There are a number of throughout the nation w followed Carter's lead and do jersey-number one, but ther even more agents clamoring f tention, given his National League draft prospects. "EVERY SLICKY in the bu .." LBC spor- ribed him wire. Hej gainst, he our great he just nses after etion are Vow gen- gained. Id When be out to get him," said Schembechler. And so, Schembechler will try to guide his prized player during the next few months. "Don't write that I'm his agent because I'm not," said the Wolverine coach. "If you write that, I'm dead. But I'm gonna advise him. I hope he listens to me." THERE'S NO reason to believe he won't, everyone else does. CBS-TV will televise Saturday's game against the Boilermakers, but when Schembechler and the stations big wigs differed on the I contest's starting time, it was the coach's words which were adhered to. Thus, the game will begin at 12:35. "They wanted 11:30, but I wouldn't give it to them," said Schembechler. "That's too early." If the Wolverines defeat Purdue, they will clinch a Rose Bowl berth. That's all 'the motivation Schembechler believes his squad needs, in spite of the fact that his team is coming of an emotional, last-minute 16-10 victory over Illinois. "We're going for the championship," he said proudly. r a touch- re, that'd 0 over the§ why he's § HWINTER 1983 § ment ac- one otherUniversity Family Housing Applications Available, NOW mber of mber one University ResidenceHalls asked§ § Applications Available, NOW receivers § Telephone 763-3164 ho have onned the Off-Campus Housing e may be for his at- Listings, Roommate Matching, Advice, Mediation Football Telephone 763-3205 siness will § 6 15 HOUSING INFORMATION OFFICE 1011 STUDENT ACTIVITIES BUILDING S 14 § 38 a.m.-12; 12:30-4:30 p.m. §§ Weekdays )NS Daily Photo by BRIAN MASCK Michigan wide receiver Anthony Carter catches one of his five passes again- st Illinois last Saturday. Kevin McKee equaled his previous personal best of 9.7 in posting the best floor exercise score of the competition. Mike scored a career high 9.6 to take second in the same event. Coach Newt Loken said, "They performed the best routines of their lives." MICHIGAN had to withdraw from team competition even before the two- day tournament began when all-around performer Dino Manus fell ill. Host Ohio State captured the team cham- pionship over five other teams. Despite withdrawing from the team competition, the individual gymnasts did well. Rick Kaufman scored 9.4 and 9.5 on the rings to place second. Nevin Hedlund managed a fourth place finish on the pommel horse with a 9.25 and Captain Milan Stanovich placed seven- th in vaulting with a 9.15 and ninth in the all-around competition. The team will send five all-around competitors to Kalamazoo this Friday to defend the title they captured last year at the Bronco All-Around Classic.
