They will look for cuts of up to 75 per- cent in the budget for these three units and examine their value to the Univer- sity. " The Exhibit Museum committee will review the museum and its activities to find possible budget cuts of up to 75 per- cent. * The committee on instructional sup- port units must propose cuts of up to 60 percent in the English Composition' Board, Pilot Program, and Coalition for the Use of Learning Skills. This will be the third review in eight years for the Coalition for the Use of Learning Skills, (CULS), according to its director, Wilton Barham: The cen- ter has plans for implementing new programs next fall, but Barham said any cut in the CULS budget would make those changes impossible.. BARHAM rejected the idea of shif- ting his program's duties to other units because, he said, CULS was formed specifically because individual depar- tments were not responding to the needs of the minority student. At the Center for Western European Studies, Assistant Director Henry' Peiter said, "One of the aspects of an international university" is the inter- national people the center brings to campus regularly. The center represents the University to the people of Europe, Peiter said. If it did not exist, something would have to be preated to take its place, he added. ALTHOUGH the Center for Research in Economic Development receives hundreds of thousands of dollars each year from federal grants, Assistant Director Charles Steedman said the small amount the center gets from LSA is vital to the program. Without general fund money, Steedman said, the center could not afford the of- fice work necessary to complete the bids it must file in order to receive the research grants. "These research grants generate overhead for the Univer- sity," he added. "Some of it is fairly substantial." IHE SAID THE center is unquestionably worth more to the school than the $60,000 it receives from LSA each year, and he does not expect any cuts. "I would be very surprised if they did it," he said. Dozens of geology students from this University and other schools around the country spend a summer at the Univer- sity's geological field - station, Camp Davis, near Jackson, Wyoming, accor- ding to Prof. Donald Eschman, its director. 6 6 6 : r . . ._ r }z _. _.- /, 'U' goes after defense funds THE STRO NBREWERY COMPANYOETOtt MICHIGAN 1981 I Jane Seymour stars as French actress Marguerite St. Just, who marries Sir Percy Blakeney without knowing his true identity, in "The Scarlet Pimpernel," to air Tuesday, Nov. 9 on CBS.
