strikers said they had strong support
from their 43,000 American co-workers.
In Windsor, about 2,500 workers mar-
ched out of the assembly plant chan-
ting, "We want parity!" The workers
set copies of a letter from Iacocca
ablaze in a barrel in the street and
warmed their hands over the flames.
Some workers carried signs reading:
"For sale: agent Lee Iacocca" or "The
Grinch that stole Christmas: Lee
Iacocca."
THE UNION has rejected an offer
that included quarterly cost-of-living
adjustments, but no "up-front" pay
raise.
Chrysler workers in the United States
rejected an almost identical offer, but
decided to reopen negotiations in
January rather than strike now.
The Canadian workers are deman-
ding that Chrysler begin closing the gap
between its workers and their counter-
parts at General Motors and Ford, who
are now paid about $3 an hour higher.
Chrysler says it can't afford to.

In Detroit, Chrysler Vice President
T.W. Miner said the company had
asked "for an extension of our current
agreement until January, when, with<-
fresh perspective, we could resume
talks in both countries in an effort to
reach a new agreement beneficial :to
all parties concerned."
CHRYSLER spokesman Robert Heab.
said by the end of next week, 2$0
workers at 16 plants in four states wNl
be on temporary layoff. The workers
will not be eligible for supplemental
unemployment benefits usually paid ley
the company because their layoffs are
due to a labor dispute.
The immediate layoffs would affet
1,000 workers in the Detroit area, 800t
Ohio plants in Twinsburg, Toledo,
Dayton, Van Wert and Sandusky, 400 in
Kokomo and Indianapolis, Ind., and 360
in Huntsville, Ala.
More than 40,000 Chrysler workersih
the United States may face layoffs if the
