'R' -9 T77HE STRO -I[S 1- EERILOV-IIR IPI[I IILGSO]FIL Reet U ProcRe-Tr E eqtontime: 02 Sec:. 'U' students develop super mileage vehicle By DAN WEINGARTEN A group of engineering and art students has designed and built a "super-mileages vehicle they hope will challenge the world's record for automotive mileage efficiency. The ultra-light, streamlined vehicle is expected to achieve a fuel efficiency of 1,800 to 2,000 miles per gallon on iso- octane, a pure hydrocarbon. The world's record stands at 1,750 miles per gallon. STUDENTS IN the Society of Automotive Engineers and their ad- visor, Prof. John Hilliard, developed the vehicle's frame and mechanical components, while art school industrial design students and shop supervisor Mark Krecic worked on the vehicle's outer body. . Although the "super-mileage" vehicle is still awaiting a transmission and needs to be tested on the road before it will be ready to compete, the students are planning the first com- petitive test for June 1983 at the Eaton proving grounds in Marshall, Mich. They also say they hope to take the vehicle to the world record competition sponsored by the Shell Oil Co. in England next summer.. Mark Strassburger, one of the eight to 10 engineering students who have been working on the vehicle for a year and a half, described the car's chances of breaking the world record as "very good." "TO ACHIEVE the kind of mileage figures we're talking about, one has to pay attention to absolutely every detail," says Hilliard. Attempts to con- struct other vehicles of this kind usually neglect some aspect of efficiency, he said. Everything about the three-wheeled vehicle is built with mileage in mind, from the aluminum frame to the modified two-horsepower engine, Strassburger said. High-quality bicycle racing tires will cut down on roll. resistance and the outer body, molded from lightweight butyl acetate, wil ' minimize wind resistance, he said. "The body of the vehicle was designed to resemble a water droplet which is the world's most aerodynamic shape," Krecic said. The students will have a computer tQ assess physical aspects bf the track and wind conditions on the day of the come petition to determine the best driving strategy. THE COMPUTER operator will be in contact with the driver by radio during the competition. A-desire to keep driver weight under 150 lbs. may'mean that a woman will be behind the wheel, students said. Built primarily for mileage first, the vehicle has a top speed of only 30 miles per hour. Krecic said that in addition to any competitive awards it may win, the project has benefitted students by giving them practical experience and a chance for interdisciplinary, cooperation. "The project's greatest value was iW initiating a hopefully ongoing relationt ship between the industrial design department and part of the engineering college," said Krecic, "providing a stronger and more practical education- al experience for the students." Strassburger agreed, saying tlt he found working on the vehicle was "in some ways more valuable than classroom experience. I gaiped good practical knowledge that will have ap- plications in a career." Krecic said he sees cooperation bet- ween schools on a project like this as one possible way of achieving the "smaller but better" goal of the ad- ministration. "InterdepartmentAl projects of this sort might help to main- tain the quality of the University in a smaller format." investigation of widespread police corrup- tion. Fading from the national political scene were Gov. Edmund Brown; def- eated for the Senate in California by San Diego's GOP Mayor Pete Wilson, and Millicent Fenwick, New Jersey's aristocratic pipe-smoking congresswoman beaten for the Senate by Democratic millionaire Frank Lautenberg. DOWN BUT not out is Los Angeles Mayor Tom Bradley, whose dream of becoming the nation's first black governor was thwarted narrowly by George Deukmejian, California's Republican attorney general. Enduring were Sen. Edward Ken- nedy of Massachusetts, whose easy re- election boosted his presidential can- didacy, Democrat John Stennis, the dean of the Senate at 81, and George Wallace, the reformed segregationist who won an unprecedented fourth term as governor of Alabama and picked up 85 percent of the black vote. The GOP House loss was more than double the post-war average for new presidents at midterm. The overall average loss by the party in control of the White House is about 30 seats. ANALYSTS ON both sides agreed the less favorable makeup of the 98th Congress could force Reagan to choose between compromise or stalemate on major issues during the next two years. Even the often supportive National Association of Manufacturers said Reagan's leadership "has been weakened by the election." As Americans considered more ballot issues than they have since the Depression in 1932, pet environmental issues generally fared poorly at the polls, with bottle bills losing in four western states. Massachusetts voted not to repeal an existing bottle law due to take effect in January, but California, Arizona, Washington and Colorado defeated propositions that would have put a nickel deposit on soda and beer bottles. In Michigan Election Day 1982 was a banner day for Democrats, who ended up with control of the governor's office and the state Legislature for the first time since 1938. Democrats Tuesday also took a 12-6 grip on Michigan's congressional delegation, handily held on to the attor- ney general and secretary of state's offices and swept the four state education boards. Democrats also apparently claimed both Michigan Supreme Court. races, even though candidates are theoretically non-partisan.
