Schembechler was upset with the press for billing this weekend's confrontation in Champaign as a grudge match between two teams that embrace con- tradictory philosophies. "ALL YOU guys are doing is looking for something sensational," he said. "I don't have anything against (Illinois head coach) Mike White. He's called me several times during the year. You guys are putting words in people's mouths. "You're trying to create something which just isn't there," he continued. "But that's journalism. I'm not going to discuss it anymore. You want to discuss football, I'll discuss football." Comments such as the following, however, suggested that some Wolverine team members view this weekend's game as more than just another Big Ten matchup. "WE'RE REALLY hungry for this game," said in- side linebacker Mike Boren after the Minnesota game. "We want to win for (Michigan assistant) coach (Gary) Moeller, because they fired him. He didn't bring in junior college transfers like that Mike White guy. He went about it the 'clean way.' Moeller, Michigan's defensive coordinator, served as head coach in Champaign before joining the Michigan coaching staff last year. Schembechler preferred to set aside the issue of the grudge match and talk about the quality of this year's Illini squad instead. "This is the best Illinois team we've played since I've been coaching," he said. "I think they're going to complete a lot of passes . The younster (Illinois quarterback Tony Eason) is an excellent thrower, he's very hard to defend and he has excellent receivers." STATISTICALLY, Schembechler's worries about the Illini air attack do have foundation. The Wolverines' pass defense currently ranks last in the nation as they have allowed an average of 266 passing yards per game. Michigan, however, has given up only an average of 84 yards per game on the ground, and they lead the Big Ten in rushing and scoring. "We've been passed on a lot," said Schembechler. "But we've been ahead in those games. What worries me is that we haven't been in a fourth-quarter dogfight since UCLA, and we lost that." Toward the end of the press conference Schem- bechler began to display a better humor. "When I retire I'm not going to miss you people a lick," he said to the media. "I wouldn't want your job. I wouldn't want to talk to guys like me either. That's worse yet." 4 I! Capt. He would have looked for- ward to it a lot more if the Illini had not stumbled in their last outing. "It's going to be like a championship game," Smith said yesterday. "It's too bad it won't be. "THEY'VE 13EEN gunning for us all season," he said. "And we've been looking forward to playing them. "I wish they hadn't lost," Smith said. "Now it won't be the same." Those comments came after Smith was informed he'd been named UPI's Midwest Offensive Player of the Week for his performance in leading Michigan to a 52-14 victory over Min- nesota. SMITH THREW three touchdown passes and ran the ball across the goal line once. It was the second time this season and fourth time in his career Smith has thrown three touchdown passes in a game. The junior from Grand Blanc has thrown 26 TD passes in his career and is second to Rick Leach's Michigan record of 48. He has completed 20 of his last 28 passes for 362 yards and six touchdowns.. "That was when I was 14-for 37 against UCLA." Smith has been intercepted 11 times this season but has boosted his com- pletion percentage to a respectable .535 (85 for 159) and thrown for 1,240 yar- ds. That's not Tony Eason territory (2,776) but Smtih hasn't thrown 376 times, either. "I had one interception Saturday - the first one I've had in a long time-and that was on a tipped ball. I don't think, ac- tually, I'm throwing that much better than I was earlier. It's just that inter- ceptions take your efficiency rating down." What also takes your passing ef- ficiency down, in the opinion of Michigan Coach Bo Schembechler, is getting taken down when you're run- ning the ball. Some observers think Schembechler isn't asking Smith to run as much as he has in the past, to reduce the abuse on his body. "I think I've been running the ball just as much lately," Smith said. "I think I ran six times against Minnesota. That's about average, although I ran nine or ten times against Wisconsin. "I think whether it affects your throwing depends how much you get beat on," he said. "I haven't been hit hard lately."
