That will leave a very negative impression on the state legislature, and result in even smaller appropriations from the state," Nadon-Gabrion said. She continued to emphasize the role of the University in the state's educational system. "Where do you think future law, medical, and science students come from?" she asked, referring to review subcommittee members William Pierce, John Romani, and Billy Evans, professors of law, health planning, and chemistry, respectively. She left the podium to a resounding applause. SUPERINTENDENT of Ann Arbor Public Schools Harry Howard stressed the role the education school has played in the high quality of Ann Arbor's schools, and tried to "dispel the myth" that there are too many teachers in the state. "The average age of teachers in the Ann Arbor schools is 43 years old," he said. "In 11 years, if a sizeable number of those take early retirement, we'll have to replace them." Howard's statements were echoed by Philip Renkel, state superintendent of public instruction in the Michigan Department of Education. "The average Michigan teacher is over 40 years old," he said. "I seriously question the wisdom of diminishing the School of Education in a time when the public education system needs that in- stitution most." SEVERAL OF the 20 speakers gran- ted time yesterday defended the quality faces cuts of the students and programs within the school. "The quality of education available here on the Ann Arbor campus is far superior to what is available at other units across the country," said Prof; Fred Minifie of the University of Washington's Department of Speech and Hearing Science. Charles Ramsey, a retired alumnus of the school, added that the school has "made many, many unique con- tributions to the understanding of the learning'process in younger children," something he felt the University should continue to support. "EDUCATION is one area that should not be left by the wayside," he said. "If the University doesn't keep abreast of this, I can't think they'll ever catch up." Gail Stephen, superintendent of Whitmore Lake schools, said teachers in her school system who graduated from the University are those she finds most qualified. "43 percent of the teachers in my district are U of M graduates," she said. "I've noticed that these are the people who I see taking leadership roles. They are the ones who will determine if my school district survives or not." Last night's hearing was open to any subject relevant to the review, while the first two meetings were directed at the school's graduate and un- dergraduate programs. The next hearing willbe Wednesday at 7 p.m. in the Rackham Assembly Hall and will focus on the school's research quality. 'PG' Almost every other University dor- mitory uses the scramble system. THERE ARE, however, supporters of the new system. Salad eaters, for in- stance, like the scramble method because it allows them to pick up their greenery without having to fight their way through the entree line. The other, more hidden features of the renovations are new ceilings, lights, floors, and counters; one entrance to the cafeteria instead of two; a new lighting and ventilation system for the dining rom and the quad's basement kitchen;' and wooden booths for the West dining room. The new lighting system has also come under fire. Some residents have complained that the lights are too weak, and housing officials almost agree. "THE LIGHTS are a waste of money," said Adams House resident Josh Horwitz, explaining that the fix- tures only provide light for people directly underneath them. "Four floodlights would give us more light in here," he said pointing to the rows of lights that now dot the ceiling of the cafeteria. Sunstad maintains that the light fix- tures are more energy efficient than traditional lights, but admits that housing is still pondering the wisdom of the selection, as the dining rooms seem too dark. "They may be on the ragged edge of darkness," Sunstad said. Students have given higher marks to several other features of the system, such as the move of the goodies - fruits and desserts - into the dining room, where students don't have to wait in line for them. STUDENTS, however, pushed to reverse an original decision to scatter the cafeteria tables around the dining room, making each table seat six to eight people. Sunstad and Schleh said the new arrangement was an attempt to make the cafeteria look less in- stitutional and more like a restaurant. But since West Quad tradition and student eating habits dictate that students often eat in groups of 10 to 15 and seem to prefer eating with their en- tire hall at a meal, the new arrangement met with opposition. Students even took to moving tables back together. So housing officials agreed to change the tables back. Survey ranks humanities depts. in top ten nationwide (Continued from Page 1) a 1971 survey, is ranked seventh in the latest report. "I am pleased to see the result," said Joel Isaacson, chairman of the depar- tment. "It does mean a decline of one place from the previous survey, but given the subjective nature of surveys, it's a very good showing." He added that due to fluctuations in the strength of the department over the past decade, "overall strength couldn't really be said to be greater than before." Previously ranked fifth in a 1969 sur- vey, the classical studies department is tied for fourth place in the latest ranking. EXPRESSING his satisfaction with the ranking, John D'Arms, the depar- tment chairman said, "there is always a bit of arbitrariness in these reports, and they can't be taken as solidly objec- tive fact. But I myself have always considered us to be in the top three or four and it is gratifying to have that am surprised that, this poll puts us at 16th," said John Knott, department chairman. "I am surprised that its not higher. I think the ranking of tenth was a more accurate ranking of where we were (in 1975), and we've certainly im- proved since then," he said. "Anyone who knows the department knows we've improved over the past five years," he said, citing the recent addition of Professors Vicinus, C.A. Patrides, Robert Lewis, and George Garret, generally considered to be among the foremost scholars in their fields of specialization. "THE ONLY thing I can say in ex- planation," concluded Knott, is that there is a time lag, and the reputation of the faculty hasn't caught up with us yet." The School of Music, which ranked six- th in the last survey, is tied for fourth place in this report. Spanish and french are rated sixth and eight respectively.
