Batsmen have roller coaster campaign By JIM DWORMAN Although the Michigan baseball team did not play any of its games in an amusement park, the team's 1982 season was one big roller coaster ride-filled with ups and downs. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, their season, like a coaster ride must, ended on a downhill. On May 22, Michigan lost games to both Ohio State and Minnesota, eliminating the team from both the Big Ten tournament and consideration for an NCAA tournament bid. "WE JUST HAPPENED to have a bad day in the tournament on the day when we had to go back-to-back," reflected Michigan coach Bud Mid- daugh on the dual defeats. The 5-4 loss to Minnesota marked the first time that a Middaugh-coached Michigan team did not win the conference champion- ship. It was also the first season since Micidaugh's arrival in 1980 that the Wolverines did not advance to the College World Series.' Nonetheless, the season did have plenty of high notes before the final, one-day nosedive. Michigan won more games, 44, than any previous Wolverine' ball club. Included in those 44 victories were streaks of 18 and 11 consecutive wins. And the second streak came in the midst of the Big Ten season to pull the Wolverines from a second-place tie with Michigan State into a first-place tie with the Buckeyes and a spot in the conference playoffs. Leading the way for Michigan was the hitting of Jim Paciorek and the pit- ching of Rich Stoll and Tim Karazim. Paciorek, the Big Ten's Most Valuable Player, finished his collegiate career by batting .443 with school records of 17 home runs and 65 runs batted in. STOLL, A SOPHOMORE, broke Scot Elam's single-season Michigan record by winning 12 games against only one defeat. The hard-throwing righthander will return his 1.83 earned run average to the Fisher Stadium pitching mound in 1983. Karazim was the Wolverines bullpen ace in 1982. The senior, who may return for his final year of eligibility in the coming season, accumulated a perfect 8-0 won-loss record with a 1.61 ERA. Karazim, however, needs only a few more credit hours to graduate and may forego his fifth-year option. Four contributors who will be lost to the Wolverines are second-team all-Big Ten center fielder Greg Schulte (.379), catcher John Young (.259), left fielder Dave Stober (.261) and shortstop Tony Evans (.282). The first three graduated, while Evans, who would be a senior, will play professional baseball. TWO OTHER PLAYERS who may not return, depending on how they fare in the professional draft, are seniors Steve Ontiveros and Jeff Jaconson. Despite pitching inconsistently, On- tiveros managed a 6-2 record with a 1.94 ERA. Jacobson, always a good fieler at second base, batted a surprising .389. Wolverine starters who will definitely return include sophomore designated hitter Ken Hayward (.349), junior cat- cher Rich Bair (.267s), junior third baseman Chris Sabo (.257) and junior pitchers Bill Shuta (6-3, 4.25), Dave Kopf (4-1, 3.58) and Gary Wayne (3-2, 1.74). It is Shuta and Sabo whom Mid- daugh feels are the keys to the Wolverines success. BOTH SHUTA AND Sabo slumped as sophomores after fine, freshman seasons. Middaugh is also hoping for the development of sophomore pitchers Jeff Hayward and Matt Ruud, and out- fielder Jeff Minick. While Middaugh cannot truly evaluate his team until after the draft, he has set one or two goals. Last season, the women softballers chalked up their most successful season ever an wound up competing in the AIAW World Series in Norman, Oklahoma, where the Wolverines took third place. The team's final record was 31-14. "Last season was very successful," said coach Bob DeCarolis. "It was more successful than we ever seriously anticipated. We rewrote practically every record." OUT OF THE 30 team records kept on the softball team, the 1982 squad broke about 25, according to DeCarolis, including the team marks for most wins and most home runs. "We didn't just break them-we literally smashed them," the Wolverine coach" said. It may be difficult, however, for this season's team to improve upon those recor ds. Gone are Diane Hatch, last season's MVP and the holder of nearly every Michigan offensive career record, and catcher Tammie Sanders, last year's' recipient of the Maize and Blue award, which is given to the player who shows the hardest work and dedication. BUT THE WOLVERINES are not totally depleted. Last year's top pitcher, Jan Boyd, will be returning, as will last season's Rookie of the Year, Mena Reyman. DeCarolis sees this season as an opportunity to rebuild. "It is going to be a pivotal year," he said. "We are going to lose a few people. However, I think that if we can get one or two more recruits that can come in and play for us right away and if we can get the same type of intensity from the senior class as we did last year, we can be contenders for the Big Ten Championship." First the good news: The team's top performer in several tournaments last year, sophomore Dan Roberts, is retur- ning. NOW THE bad news: All-Big Ten selection Ed Humenik and Steve Mad- dalena, the other two top golfers for the Wolverines last season, are gone. But if you're a true optimist, there is more good news. Michigan finished in ninth place in the Big Ten in 1982, so there is nowhere to go but up. But the Wolverines are going to be relying on a lot of inexperienced players to help them climb back up the Big Ten ladder. "We're going to be very young,"' ad: mitted acting head coach Jim Carras "We'll only have two players bac (Roberts and Gary Zenkel) who played all the time for us." BUT THE play of Roberts in 1982 haS given reason to think optimistically for Michigan's future. The Ypsilanti native was one of the few bright spots for the Wolverines last season, leading the team in several tournaments. He paced the Blue squad in the Big Ten tourney, shooting a four-round total of 293 and ending up in 11th place in the individua standings. He had a- season-best 71 i that meet.
