Scheffey, a- University of Michigan senior, was part of the School of Natural Resources team that competed in the 31st Annual Midwestern Forresters Conclave at Ames, Iowa last Saturday. He captured first place in the' tobacco-spitting event for the second straight year. BUT THE Michigan team could defeat only eight of the nine teams it competed against. However, second place isn't so bad when the size of the Wolverine squad is taken into account. With a rag-tag force of only 13, com- pared to 40 for the new champions from the University of Missouri and most of the other teams, the Wolverines edged out Southern Illinois and Minnesota for runner-up honors. Other schools represented were host Iowa State, Michigan State, Ohio State, Wisconsin, Illinois, and Purdue. Last year, Michigan hosted the co-ed conclave at a site near Hell, Mich., cap- turing top honors overall. But that team was more than three times larger than this year's entry. "EVERYBODY was pleased," said two-time tobacco spitting champ Schef- fey. The senior added that although the Michigan team was small, it was the most vocal. "We cheered for the teams who weren't cheering," he said. The competition consisted of fifteen events which included chain-throwing, the pulp toss, two-lady bucksawing, speed-chopping, and dendrology (iden- tification of woody plants). The "special event" this year was the log-surfing contest. Forresters' spokesman Phil Dinehart said, "You have two red pines of different diameters lashed together with a ten- foot piece of rope." The former den- drology champion explained that the i A Universiy Players Showcase Production THE 'NCORNER JAMES BALDWIN object was for four teammates (in- cluding one female) to take turns riding while the others pull. If the rider touches the ground, the team is penalized one second. THE MICHIGAN squad of Brad Bur- ton, Chip Davis, Leila Freils, and Phil Schmidt reached the finish-line first, but received two such penalties, putting them in second overall. "Leila (Freils) fell off twice," explained Dinehart. Mark "Animal" Neggers added the one-man bucksawing championship to the Michigan effort by sawing through a 12-inch log in only 58 seconds. He placed second in the event last year. Neggers also teamed with Russ Witherspoon to take second in the log- roll and combined with Scheffey to take second in the two-man bucksawing competition. Other Michigan placers were Sue Thiel and John Goodburn in the DHB (Diameter at Breast Height) estimation, second and third respec- tively, and Mary Pettway, fourth in dendrology. How did Ohio State do? "They did lousy, as always," said a team mem- ber, who asked to remain anonymous. NEW ORLEANS (AP) - Wilfred Benitez will defend his super welter- weight championship against Thomas Hearns at the Louisiana Superdome Dec. 3 in a bout matching fighters whose only losses were against Sugar Ray Leonard. Promoter Don King said yesterday the Benitez-Hearns World Boxing Council championship bout was previously scheduled for Las Vegas, then Caracas, Venezuela, but fell through each time. ON THE SAME card, Wilfredo Gomez will make the 17th defense of his super bantamweight crown against Lupe Pintor, currently the WBC ban- tamweight champion. Benitez, 43-1-1, won the super welter- weight titled with a 12th-round knockout over Maurice Hope May 23, 1981. In his most recent defense, on Jan 30, he foiled the comeback hopes of Roberto Duran. Hearns, 34-1-0, lost his World Boxing Association championship to Leonard in the 14th round Sept. 16, 1981. LEONARD IS scheduled to announce next month whether he will continue to fight after recovering from a detached retina. "My last appearance here in New Orleans was one of displeasure - 'No mas, No mas,' " King said, referring t4 what Duran said when he gave up in his title defense against Leonard here. "I really want to redeem the sport of boxing in New Oreans." Gomez will be making his 17th defen- se of the WBC title he won from Yun Dong-Kyun in 1977. Gomez is 37-1-1, with all of his victories on knockouts. Only three of his fights have gone more than 10 rounds. Pintor won the WBC bantamweigh championship in a 15-round decision over Carlos Zarate June 3, 1979. In his most recent defense, he stopped Seung Hoon Lee in five rounds June 3. GRIDDE PICKS How do people pick Griddes? Kappas and Tri-Delts pick their favorites on the basis of which team has the best- looking quarterback (or is it best- looking financial statement?). No one will pick Howard to win. Why? Would BE IN THE FOREFRONT OF TODAY'S TECHNOLOGY Air Force scientific engineering of- ficers plan tomor- row's weapon systems.
