'PG' 11:35 Q®SCTV TELEVISION NETWORK GEO vote extended (Continued from Page 1) (Continued from Page 1) SECONDLY, the protesters feel that because Barnard is directly affiliated with the University of Capetown Medical School, an official white university, he is an institutional representative of a segregated educational system. "We believe it is inappropriate for Eastern as an educational institution to condone, through the granting of an honorary degree, the institutional racism of that country," said Woods. Also under fire are Barnard's political beliefs. "His commitment to full black political participation is suspect," said Woods, "and Eastern should not honor an individual who is less than a full supporter." HE SAID that although Barnard is considered to be an opponent of apar- theid, he has also publically stated that he is not a supporter of full black political participation. EMU also adopted a policy in 1980 of divesting from investment or business transactions with South African enter- prises, Woods said. This policy, although not the central issue of the protest, puts Eastern on the record as opposing apartheid, he said. Jerry Curtis, student body president, said the students agree with the con- cerns of the faculty, but are more worried about the problems that might develop at the commencement ceremonies if Barnard speaks. "IF HE IOES come, there will be a protest - many blacks will be leaving the ceremony. Graduation will be ruined for those blacks and the others," he said. "Commencement is for the students - for them and their families it is the culmination of their years spent here. The last place to bring controver- sy into college is the commencement ceremonies,'' he added. In response to the concerns expressed at the meting, Porter established a task force composed of faculty and studentts to investigate the situation and seek a resolution that will satisfy everyone, Curtis said. "In my opinion, this is not a com- promisable issue," he said. "Given everybody agrees on the mistakes made, the basic issue is whether or not Barnard will be coming." Those n the task force are opposed to Barnard's appearance, he said, and therefore, they will probably reach a conclusion in the two weeks allotted the task force that is in line with their present feelings. Milford said she finds the task force "a cop-out." She said she does not think Porter will rescind the invitation to Barnard unless the spirit of the students and faculty change his mind. He might reconsider, she said, "if those that are protesting have a strong commitment, if they stick to it."
