Page 10-Tuesday, October 26, 1982-The Michigan Daily Surprising Buckeye icers tied for first By MIKE MCGRAW The sun has risen on a new Central Collegiate Hockey Association season, and after the first weekend of play there lie three teams at the top of the standings. Two of those teams, Michigan State and Bowling Green are right where they are expected to be, but the third, Ohio State, finds itself in that position only after pulling a big upset in a weekend sweep over traditional powerhouse Michigan Tech. But the first weekend does not a season make, as forgetful CCHA fans could be reminded it was the local favorite Michigan Wolverines who opened the season last year with two upset victories over Tech in Houghton. The Buckeyes feat took place in the friendly confines of the aptly-named OSU Ice Rink by scores of 3-0 and 6-4. Buckeye goalie John Dougan earned one-half of this week's CCHA most valuable player honor as he made 77 saves in the two games. Dave Kobryn dished out five assists and Paul Pooley knocked in three goals for the Bucks. Ohio State now has another challenge this week as they move on to East Lansing to tangle with conference favorite Michigan State. Michigan State 4-8, Illinois-Chicago 0-0 The other half of this week's MVP combination is another goaltender, All- American Ron Scott of Michigan State, who handed Illinois- Chicago Circle con- secutive shutouts in the Spartans' im- pressive weekend sweep of the Flames. On the scoring side of the MSU attack, Mark Hamway notched three goals to go along with teammate Kelly Miller's two goals and two assists. Val Belmonte, making his coaching debut for Chicago this year, was left looking for not only his first CCHA win but his team's first goal. East Lansing is noticeably excited about the Spartan icers as 6,159 packed Munn Ice Arena on Saturday. CCHA. Report pions started fast with two home vic- tories. The games produced the two leading scorers in the cnference with Brian Hills and John Semanski each collecting seven points. Tom Rudrud was tops for the Bulldogs, brightening the red light twice. Miami 3-11, Northern Michigan 3-6 The Miami Redskins got off to an un- defeated start as they produced the conference's first tie and also the largest scoring output of the young season. Greg Lukas and Steve Morris each scored three goals for the 'Skins with Morris grabbing a hat trick on Friday. Eric Ponath countered with five points for Northern. Despite the lopsidedness of the score, coach Sandy Vong had some good things to say about the match. "IT WAS A well-played match by both teams," said Vong. "It was very exciting on both offense and defense. Very few balls dropped." Offensively, the Michigan team had 30 kills with Sue Rogers and Alison Noble leading the way with . u a aaa , a ..ua v w John Semanski, Bowling Green 3. Chris Seychel, MICHIGAN Greg Lukas, Miami ...... Ted Speers, MICHIGAN . Dave Kobryn, OSU ...... Some good news for the team was the fine play of Barb Bensing, who had five kills. The fact that Bensing even got to play was news in itself. Bensing, a transfer from Utah, had been declared ineligible for the year and previously only practiced with the team. Her case was repetitioned, however, and she was alowed to play in Friday's match. The loss dropped the Wovlerines record to 3-7 in the Big Ten and 9-13 overall.
