The*Michigan Daily. ,Passblocki SPORTS Tuesday, October 26, 1982 Page 9 ByJ30B WOJNOWSKI Bo Schembechler did not deny that Noithwestern quarterback Sandy Sch- wab did indeed pass the Michigan backup defense silly during the second if of the Wolverines' 49-14 romp on aturday. Nor did he downplay the numbers that Schwab put together: 71 attempts, 45 completions, 436 yards. WHAT RANKLED Bo yesterday was something that has rankled him more than once this season - the officiating and the rules that allow such passing histrionics to be achieved. "Don't ask me to rush the passer hen the other team is allowed to grab y men to make sure they don't," complained Schebechler at his weekly press luncheon yesterday. "The rules- makers have allowed linemen to use their hands and the officials have allowed them to hold. So now what you have is guys going back and throwing the ball because you can't rush them. You get tackled every time you go in. After the season, we'll have discussions on the rules, and probably on officiating "Nobody is rushing the ball on us,' he continued. "The first guy that runs the ball through there for 15 yards, I'll run out and shake his hand.' Most of the Wildcats' passing yar- dage came in the second half with the Wolverine starting unit on the bench, which brought up another problem for Schembechler to worry about. WE HAVEN'T been playing the four- rules th period for the last three weeks now," said Bo. "These other guys are going head-to-head down to the wire, pulling games out. If we get into a tight game, that's to their advantage." With Minnesota and passing whiz Mike Hohensee coming to town this weekend, the Michigan defensive secondary can expect another busy af- ternoon. But Schembechler hinted that irk Schembechler his own offense might take to the air a little more -specifically, to All- American flanker Anthony Carter. "Anthony right now is in the best shape he's been in all year," said the Wolverine head man. "And in the next four games, I think he'll explode. Only one thing has to be done with Anthony, we've got to get him the ball - which we haven't done. THE MAN responsible for getting Carter the ball, quarterback Steve Smith, went a long way toward proving that he may finally be able to do just that by completing 10 of 12 passes for three touchdowns in just one half of ac- tion against the Wildcats. "He only threw one bad pass out of 12," said Schembechler. "Earlier, I think he was pressing a little, plus we didn't have Anthony at full speed. Right now he' calm and keeping himself under con- trol." "But it doesn't make any difference,' continued Bo. "Our offense will get enough points. Defense will make the difference." The Wolverines will be almost com- pletely healthy for this week's game against the Gophers. Defensive tackle Kevin Brooks, who has been out with a knee injury for about three weeks now, will return to practice this week, as will fullback Jerald Ingram, who is yet to play this season because of a knee in- jury. Tailback Rick Rogers broke a finger in the Northwestern game and receiver Vince Bean dislocated a finger but both will practice at full strength this week. At the Indiana In- vitational Saturday, the Wolverines outran a 7-team field which included the defending NCAA Champion Texas- El Paso. The Wolverines have won all four meets in which they competed this season. "BRIAN DIEMER and Gerard Donakowski looked super in the race," said MMichigan coach Ron Warhurst. "Knowing that several members of the University of Texas-El Paso were run- ning in the race, they were a little in- timidated prior to the start. "But now that they have seen they can run with these guys, their confidence levels have soared." Diemer finished third with a time of 24:20, followed five seconds and one place later by Donakowski, a senior. Jim Schmidt and Bill O'Reilly tied for seveth at 24:52. The Indiana course will serve as the sight of this year's NCAA Champion- ships, thus giving Michigan a first-hand look at the eight-kilometer trail. "It's a pretty tough course, with a lot of uphill," said Diemer, a junior. He ad- ded that the team has done quite a bit of training on uphill courses around Ann Arbor. The harriers return to action this Saturday as they travel to Purdue for the Central Collegiate Championships. Stickers rip Toledo Victory follows victory for the Michigan women's field hockey team. This was the case as the Wolverines dominated the Toledo Rockets last Saturday, winning 5-1 and extending their record to 10-2. "Toledo has an entirely different game plan from all of the other teams that we play," said assistant coach Laura Pieri. "They just slam the ball up field, and blast as many shots on goal as possible." TOLEDO scored first, but theWolverines adjusted their plan of at- tack and dominated the rest of the way. "The girls bounced back and handled Toledo very well," said head coach Candy Zientek. Senior forward Sara Forrestel led the Wolverines by scoring three goals. This season Forrestel has seven goals and one assist. She has 27 career goals. This afternoon at 4:00, Michigan hosts Toledo in a return match. This week is the culmination of the field hockey season and Zientek is not concerned that her team will suffer a, letdown. -DOUGLAS B.
