ARTS Tuesday, October 20, 1982 The Michigan Daily Page 5 Oliveira's fancy fiddling Gamelan ensemble astounds - By Lauris Kaldjian Violinist Elmar Oliveira's Monday night Ann Arbor debut in Rackham Auditorium followed hard upon Itzhak Perlman's appearance of two weeks ago./It is difficult, if not impossible, to refrain from juxtaposing the two con- certs and judging by comparison. Yet it would be unfair if we did not consider each violinist separately, complemen- ting and criticizing solely within the context of each performance. Being the first American ever to secure a Gold Medal at the Inter- national Tchikovsky Violin Competition in Moscow, Oliveira has established himself firmly in the international music scene. His practiced technique and insightful interpretation combine to create a spectrum of musical effects. Oliveira opened the concert with Pergolesi's Sonata No. 12, which served as a palatable appetizer. Already characteristic qualities of his skill were clearly distinguishable: his smooth, placid phrasing in slow tempi movements as compared to his energetic and accented (often heavily) approach in faster tempi. A tedious and challenging task it is to perform post-Bartok literature to many audiences. The listener's lack of com- prehension seems directly proportional, to his coughing and his need to rustle programs. A reasonable case in point was Oliveira's laudatory rendition of the Sonata No. 1, by Bloch. Such un- familiar, if not foreign, music requires great attention on the part of the soloist who must show the audience what lies in the music; for most anything may seem odd at first hearing. The first movement of the Bloch, marked Agitato, was agitated indeed. The stark contrast between the rattling percussion on the G string and the soaring melodies on the E string created a restless, sometimes con- fusing mood. The soothing, almost mesmerizing repetition of the second movement (Molto quieto) conjured up images of loneliness and endless space. The use of a mute added to the mysterious dream-like character. The last movement had an eerie quality marked by ponticello bowing. Oliveira succeeded in making sense out of music that is difficult to phrase, for the notes themselves do not suffice. A solo violinist should always lead the pianist in recital, right? Not quite. When playing Beethoven's Piano-Violin Sonatas (notice the order in which each is stated) both piano and violin are equal, it is duet chamber music. Oliveira and pianist Robert McDonald did not strike the desired balance in voicing in their performance of Beethoven's Sonata No. 6 in A major. Nevertheless, the music still had its beauty, though of a more soloistic nature. Oliveira showed what his tricky fingers could do with Sarasate's Zapateado. Yes, it was quick, exciting, and all that, but even if it had been flawless there would have been something slightly lacking: a pervasive sense of musical phrasing behind the technique. Ending with an encore befitting his forte, Oliveira played the Debussey- Heifetz Beau Soir. With ease and sen- sitivity he freely expressed the intent of that calming, impressionistic music. By Lou Fin (or SOME PEOPLE say the best things in life are free. That was certainly the case Friday night when a small piece of Southeast Asian tradition was transported to Rackham Auditorium- a Javanese shadow-puppet play. The "dhalang" or puppeteer, is con- sidered to be "an exceptional person'ii terms of intelligence, endurance, and spiritual strength," according to'a School of Music specialist in Southeast Asian music. After viewing the 3-hour manipulation of puppets, acting all the parts, and simultaneously directing the "gamelan" orchestra of traditional Javanese instruments which accom- panies him, the puppeteer emerges as a master in his art. A final opportunity to indulge in tie light pleasure of the puppet play will come again on November 4; Elmar Oliveira appeared at Rackham Auditorium on Monday night.
