"Right now, there are nine teams hoping to get us - we're the only one that hasn't lost," said Schembechler at his weekly press luncheon yesterday. "We couldn't ask for any better position right now. But, there's a long way to go -= a long way." riding along undefeated and then boom, boom, they're out of it. That North- western loss probably took something out of them." That Northwestern team also hap- pens to be Michigan's opponent this Saturday, so Schembechler was more than complimentary about a Wildcat team that is 2-5 on the year, with a vic- tory over Northern Illinois in addition to Minnesota. THEY'VE GOT a good offense, they're very definitely improved over- last year," said the Wolverine head. coach. "We don't want to take them, lightly, they're capable of beating; anyone."- The Wildcats have relied heavily this season on the throwing arm of fresh- man quarterback Sandy Schwab and Schembechler expects to see the ball in the air again this weekend, as well as the next weekend, as well as the next weekend and the next . .. "There will- be 200 passes thrown against us in the next four games," he said. "We've got Northwestern, Min- nesota, Illinois, and Purdue, and they're all going to throw the ball." ONE PERSON who threw the ball well during last Saturday's 29-7 win over Iowa was Wolverine quarterback Steve Smith, who completed 13 of 24 passes for 172 yards and earned the praise of his coach. "I thought he played a helluva game," said Schembechler. "He might have had about two bad plays, that's it. "We didn't run him a lot, that was by design. I don't want him running a lot," he continued, referring to the fact that Smith carried the ball only three times in the game. TUOUGH RE was obviously pleased with the victory over the Hawkeyes, Schembechler nevertheless found the customary black cloud in the silver lining. "We gotta play better," he said. "I think we played pretty good defensively but offensively we didn't block as well as I might have liked. Give some credit to Iowa, they're a pretty good team." The best of the Michigan defensive contingent was cornerback Jerry Burgei, who was named the team's defensive champion of the week. Tailback Lawrence Ricks, who rushed for 120 yards, was the offensive cham- pion. The only debilitating injury suf- fered by a Wolverine was a knee injury incurred by backup tackle Bob Popowski. His status for the rest of the season is uncertain. Cornerback John Lott, who suffered a forearm fracture two weeks ago and didn't make the trip to Iowa, will return to practice this week and may see some playing time against the Wildcats. Defensive tackle Kevin Brooks, who went out with a knee injury in the In- diana game, will start running again this week and could see action as early as next week. Backup tight end Eric Kattus is still suffering from recurring inflammation of the knee and is out for this week's game and possibly the .se n. Total First Downs ..... Rushing ............. Michigan's recovery cannot be led by those reviving all the old, useless quarrels that have separated business and labor, men and women, Detroit and outstate, citizens and their government. Our recovery depends on everyone, men and women, black and white, all trained and educated, treated fairly, working together well. Our recovery depends on a strong system of public education-our economy tomorrow reflects the quality of our schools today. We need new leaders and new policies for a state government that knows how our resources, public and private, will work together.
