SPORTS The Michigan Daily Sunday, October 17, 1982 Page 7 Milwaukee evens series /0000m C y. Ni; ho 4 ' -N., wr QUARTERL By SCOTT M. LEWIS Special to the Daily MILWAUKEE- The most important stroke of the bat for Milwaukee in game four of the World Series was not Gorman Thomas' game-winning single. Nor was it Robin Yount's or Cecil Cooper's clutch hits which brought the Brewers even with St. Louis in the seventh inning after trailing 5-1. Rather, it was the seemingly harmless ground ball by Ben Oglivie, which St. Louis misplayed for a costly error, that loomed largest yesterday as Milwaukee staged a six-run seventh-inning rally to beat the Cardinals, 7-5. The dramatic victory knotted the best-of-seven series at two games apiece. PRIOR TO the rally, the Brewers had done nothing right. The Cardinals scored four times in the first two innings off starter Moose Haas. Things were so bad for Milwaukee that in the Cardinal second, two base runners managed to score on a caught fly ball, earning Tom Herr, who hit the sacrifice fly, a niche in the series record book. Meanwhile, rookie St. Louis lefthander Dave LaPointe was holding the Brewers in check, scattering five hits and yielding only one run over the first six innings.' Then came the seventh. With one out, Oglivie hit a two bouncer to the right side, which Kieth Hernandez grabbed between first and second. His throw to LaPointe, who was covering first base, was perfect, but the ball fell out of the pitcher's glove for an error. THAT WAS the break that Milwaukee needed. A Don Money single and Jim Gantner's double made the score 5-2 and sent Cardinal manager White Herzog to the mound to replace LaPointe with losing pitcher Doug Bair. Bair proi- ptly walked Paul Molitor to load the bases for Yount. The Brewers' shortstop responded with a check-swing two- run single to right. Exit Bair, enter Jim Katt, the 44-year-old patriarch of the Cardinal staff who has appeared in all four series games. Cooper greeted Kaat with a hard shot to third which Ken Oberkfell knocked down but could not retrieve in time to make a play.. When Kaat fell behind 2-1 on the next hitter, Ted Simmons, Herzog turned to rookie Jeff Lahti for relief. Such relief was not forthcoming. Lahti hung a curve ball to Gorman Thomas, who drilled the offering to left center for a single as Yount and Cooper came home with the winning runs. a OUR NEW REGULAR SUNDAY FEATURE! STOP IN AND EXPLORE ANN ARBORS NON-PROFIT SPOR TS OF THE DAIL Y: EMU losing streak reaches 25 J I y PAUL RESNICK 24 AND NO MORE proclaimed a sign in the' stands at Eastern Michigan University's homecoming football game yesterday. Unfortunately for the disappointed crowd, EMU extended its losing streak to 25 in a suspense-filled 14-13 loss to Ohio University. After trailing most of the game and having a drive stall on EMU's one-foot line, Ohio fipally took a 14-13 lead with. less than five minutes left to play in the game. Eastern Michigan still had a chance to break its losing streak, but a 22-yard field goal attempt sailed just wide to the right with eight seconds left in the game. Coupled with last week's 20-19 loss to Toledo, which resulted from a field goal by Toledo with ten seconds remaining, this loss might have demoralized the EMU Hurons. Interim head coach Bob Lapointe felt otherwise. "They're still playing hard and they haven't given Op," he said. "You go home and punch a pillow for a while to get it out of your system and then try to regroup on Sun- day." "I still think we're going to get someone," said the head coach. When asked who the likely victim would be, he said, "Who's our next opponent? "Northern Illinois," he said, an- swering his own question. "North- western got it (a win against Northern Illinois). Maybe we can do the same thing." Women harriers finish second Special to the Daily YPSILANTI- The women's cross- country team took second-place with 31 points in a three-team race at Eastern Michigan. Western Ontario took first with 29 points. Top Finishers for Michigan were Lisa Larsen and Melanie Weaver. Both crossed the finish line with a time of 16:39. Spikers lose to Ohio State The Michigan women's volleyball team dropped a match to Ohio State, 9- 15 13-15, 8-15. The Wolverines led 8-3 in the second game but the Buckeyes came back to knot the contest at 11. Michigan now has a 9-11 overall record and a 3-6 mark in Big Ten competition. Michigan's recovery cannot be led by those reviving all the old, useless quarrels that have separated business and labor, men and women, Detroit and outstate, citizens and their government. Our recovery depends on everyone, men and women, black and white, all trained and educated, treated fairly, working together well. Our recovery depends on a strong system of public education-our economy tomorrow reflects the quality of our.schools today. We need new leaders and new policies for a state government that knows how our resources, public and private, will work together.
