" Legendary
band lives up
* to its name

By Rob Weisberg
W HAT CAN YOU say about the
Legendary Blues band? I don't
think there's any need to bombard you
with superlatives; that's been done of-
ten enough, even in this paper (they
liked our last review of them so much
that they stuck it on the back of their
record cover):
Suffice it to say that they were in good
form once again, hurting just a bit in
the guitar department-Peter Ward
has taken over only recently-but other-
wise sounding as tight as ever.
Suffice it also to say that Ann Arbor
audiences once again missed out on a

glorious opportunity to see good music
in this normally barband ravaged town.
"You definitely are the twenty-five hip-
piest people in Ann Arbor," harpist'and
band leader Jerry Portnoy told the
faithful at Joe's. The crowd didn't get
much bigger, either, despite the lure of
Pinetop Perkins' feather-light touch on
the piano-an instrument that might as
well be named after him.
But no more superlatives. I mean,
what can you say about the canny con-
sistency of Willie Smith on drums, or
the marvelously subtle interplay of
Perkins and Portnoy, or the unfailing
bottom provided by Mr. Calvin Jones'
bass?
A hell of a lot more than you can say

Dreyfuss
stable after
automobile
accident
BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. (AP)
Academy Award-winning actor
Dreyfuss remained hospitalized in good
condition Wednesday recuperating
from superficial injuries suffered in a
car accident.
Dreyfuss, driving alone through
Benedict Canyon, apparently lost con-
trol of his car, which crossed lanes, hit.
a curb, careened into a palm tree and
flipped over, said Los Angeles County
sheriff's Lt. Russ Olson said.
He was "booked. in absentia" oh
Monday for driving under the influence
of alcohol and possession of a controlled
substance. Police found a white
powder, which they suspect is cocaine,
in Dreyfuss' Mercedes Benz.

The Legendary Blues Band appeared at Joe's Star Lounge Thursday night.

about the local yokels who seem deter-
mined to deny the existence of great
music in our midst. Joe Tiboni of Joe's
scratched his head and counted his
losses, soothed only slightly when in-
formed that maybe everybody was
home studying for midterms.
Everybody except the throng I spotted
outside of Second Chance reveling in

the post-concert abandon of another
peerless cover band.
Fans of the real thiing will be pleased
to know that the Legendaries have a
second albumton tap to follow their Life
of Ease debut LP. To be entitled Hot
and Oily or Hot and Greasy or
something like that (the band hasn't
decided exactly what yet), it'll feature
seven more original songs-a good por-

tion considering most blues bands tend
to stick to the classics even on record.
So if you didn't make it down to Joe's
you still have a chance to discover what
the real blues are all about.
These guys will probably be
back-hopefully to be appreciated
rather than ignored.
