40 Page 6-Friday, October 15, 1982-The Michigan Daily ICERS FACE TEST IN SEASON OPENER Michigan faces Windsor By JOE CHAPELLE The Wolverine hockey team that will take the ice tonight to open its 1982-83 season with a two-game series against Windsor is one of the youngest Michigan teams fielded in the past few ' seasons. For that reason, coach John Giordano is looking at this game as a test for his inexperienced Wolverine squad.' "It is the season opener and we just don't know that much about Windsor," said Giordano. "We aren't preparing for this game in the sa'me way we prepared for games the rest of the season. We didn't have the opportunity to study films and pick out Windsor's' weaknesses.' GIORDANO sees tonight's matchup as the first chance for some of his less experienced players to get a taste of playing an actual college hockey game. "Since we didn't have the chance toJ prepare (with films, etc.), against Win- dsor, we are really using this game as another veek of practice," said Gior- dano. The Mthigan coach will use this weekend'; series to further experiment with the Volverine squad and hone the skills of h team for next week's CCHA conferene opener against Notre Dame. "NO MTTER how hard you work them, youcan't simulate actual game conditionsin practice," said Giordano. The Wolvrine mentor maintains that the succes of the Wolverine icers this season wilidepend on how fast some of the youngr members of the team mature, ad the Lancer-Wolverine matchup povides them with their first opportunit; to garner some much needed playng time. "In a lot c ways, this type of game is the hardestto play," said Giordano. Windsor, acording to Giordano, may not present te Wolverines with an easy series. The lncers have everything to gain by beatig Michigan, including the Detroit areacollege hockey bragging rights, while the Wolverines will be using the gare as a primer for the up- coming CCHA season. The last time the Wolverines met the Lancers was an exhibition game in Yost Ice Arena during the 1980-81 season. Michigan blanked Windsor in that af- fair, 6-0, before a crowd of 2,789. H b. Giordano .. tests young team ''icers combine potent offense, inexperience, great potential 1982 -83 Michigan Ice Hockey Roster ....," By MIKE McGRAW Michigan enters the 1982-83 season with a lot of youth and a lot of new faces, but given some time the Wolverines may become a pleasant Surprise this winter. "People should be patient with us this year," said coach John Giordano, en- tering his second complete year behind the bench. "We potentially have 15-20 starters that are freshmen and sophomores, but we have a lot of poten- tial." ONE THING you can expect from this year's icers are a lot of goals. Michigan returns their top two scoreres from last season co-captains Ted Spears and Brad Tippett. Backing them up on the forward lines will be seniors Joe Milburn, Don Krussman and Billy Reid, and juniors SteveYoxheimer and Jim McCauley. "W'e should score a lot of goals this year," said second- year goalie John Elliott. "We'll be slow coming out because-of inexperience, but in the-end we'll be a better team than we were last year." The Wolverines will feel their inex- perience most in the defense where the losses of graduate Steve Richmond and Dave Richter will be heavily felt. This year the icers have to rely on under- classmen and transfer John DeMartino to protect goalies Elliott and Mark 'Chiamp.t "THE DEFENSE is very young and needs game experience and to improve on their daily skills," said Giordano. "Out of our eight defensemen, Bill Brauer, Doug May, Mike Neff, Pat Goff, Todd Carlile, John Hawkins, Tom Dolan, and DeMartino, none have risen to the top yet. One of my concerns is how fast our defense can mature." The defense needs to mature pretty quickly, as Michigan's first eight con- ference games are against the four finalists in the CCHA last year. -Elliott (3.50 goals against in 26 games) and Chiamp (3.7 in three 'We should score a lot of goals this year. We'll be slow coming out because of inex- perience, but in the end we'll be a better team than we were last year.' -Jon Elliott games) should split the goaltending duties. As a freshman, Elliott was four- th in the conference among goalies. GIORDANO LOOKS upon seniors Speers and Tippett, though, as his key men. "Those'two add desire to the team. Evey time they're on the ice they give it everything they've got. Hopefully, their hustle will rub off on the rest of the team." One problem with having a new team, though, is getting them to play well with one another and seeing who sorks well together. "We'll have four good lines, we're starting to flow better in prac- tice," said Livonia sophomore Paul Kobylarz. "Coach has been working us hard and I think we're starting to show it." "It's too early in the season to say how we'll do," added Giordano. "Their commitment will determine our finish. our goal is to play hard." So as the Michigan hockey team heads into the '82-83 season, they have a lot of question marks, but the CCHA this year will be up for grabs from the second position to the bottom. As sum- med up by Freshman Chris Seychel, 'Everyone here has a great attitude and wants to be a winner." By TAM BENTLEY While a fourth-place finish in last year's Central Collegiate Hockey Association race is disappointing, Michigan coach John Giordano had many bright spots, as both he and the team made CCHA debuts with an 18-15- 5 overall record. The Wolverines left the Western Collegiate Hockey Association behind, and stormed into the CCHA with high hopes and a few surprises. The first surprise of the year was the Wolverines' white-washing of highly regarded Michigan Tech. Not only did the Michigan icers emerge victorious twice on the home ice at Yost Arena but they also suc- ceeded in toppling Tech in the first two games of the season at the Student Ice Arena in Houghton. The Huskies, who ended their CCHA season in third place' with an overall record of 23-14-3, suf- fered 3-2, 3-0 defeats in front of their home crowd and 5-4, 3-2 losses in Ann Arbor in the season's second half. ANOTHER SEASON plus came with the Wolverines walking away with a 4-3 victory over the second place Michigan State Spartans in the teams' first meeting of the season and also managing a 4-4 mid-season tie. The Michigan squad was full of question marks as the season started, not the least of which was a new head coach embarking on his first full season in Wolverine hockey. In addition, Paul Fricker, the Wolverines' ace goaltender who earned All-American honors in his sophomore season, chose to move on to professional hockey and signed with the Hartford Whalers of the National Hockey League, leaving the Wolverines with an empty net. IN DEFENSE, the team could count on strong leadership from seniors Steve Richmond, Dave Richter, Brian Lun- dberg, Mark Perry and Paul Brandrup; but what about the offense? In scoring, only Richmond and junior forward Ted 'Speers returned among the top seven scorers from the previous year and finally the Wolverines moved out of the Western Collegiate Hockey Association (WCHA) and into the Cen- tral Collegiate Hockey Association '(CCHA). What could come from a season whose beginning was so sket- chy? One thing which emerged was a sur- prise goalie find, a 6-1 freshman from Spencerville, Ontario: Jon Elliott. Elliott logged 1509:26 in playing time and came away with a season record of 9-11-4 while veteran goalie Peter Mason clocked in at only 713:41 with a record of 8-4-1. THE OFFENSE and scoring problem, though, was another story. "There were no offensive players, we had good defensive players but no real offense," said Giordano on the season as a whole. "We didn't have five guys who could score ten goals each game, we didn't have a balanced offense, but this year we feel we have a pretty balanced offense and defense. The big key will be in the Blue Line, how the defense matures." One of the most detrimental aspects of last season was the defensive loss of graduating seniors Richmond, Richter, Lundberg, Perry and Branduup. "The biggest and most obvious thing we lost was our experience back on defense," said Giordano. "We had guys here for four years who knew what it was like to go on the road. Now we have a bunch of kids who don't know what it's like to go on the road and travel. But that's the challenge this year. Every year you have challenges and you just have to rise to the occasion and meet, them."
