SPO RTS Tuesday, October 12, 1982 The Michigan Daily ___________ ____________ Page 9 Upsets tighten race for the roses By BARB BARKER Somebody sure must have cleaned up last weekend. If there ever was a time to bet against the Big Ten pre-game point spreads, last Saturday was it. Wisconsin blanks Ohio State, Northwestern stuns Min-, nesota and Indiana finished two yards away from upending Iowa. THE CONFERENCE race is heating up, and Michigan coach Bo Schem- bechler, whose team was the only Big Ten squad to escape the weekend without a scare, feels that there is no school in the Big Ten that possess a clear shot at the Pasadena ticket. "I don't think Illinois is the one team to beat any more than Iowa, Ohio State or even Wisconsin is for that matter," said Schembechler at his weekly press luncheon yesterday. "Any time two Big Ten opponents take the field an6y team can win. . . I don't think there's a con- ference game you can count on to be easy." "There were a lot of changes this weekend," he continued. "Now Ohio State has to win at Illinois." SCHEMBECHLER had nothing but praise for the Wildcat's 31-21 victory over Minnesota. "They knocked Minnesota right out of the race," he said. "They got some good people. (Of fensive tackle Chris) Hinton will be a number one draft choice."~ As far as last weekend's Michigan State confrontation, Schembechler still thinks the Spartans are a strong team. "WE FELT WE had to do some things to open them up," he said. "We didn't want to go in there with the idea of battering them into submission. I think that's what Notre Dame and Ohio State thought, but they couldn't do it. We took a different approach, so we rolled out, used a little option and passed a little. Offensively, this was our best gave against a good deiense. No other team has been able to move on them." Wolverine quarterback Steve Smith, who completed 10 of 20 pass attempts for 182 yards and two touchdowns, against the Spartans, was named the game's offensive champion. "Steve rose to the occasion against Michigan State playing his best game of the year for us," Schembechler said. "Steve ran, passed and showed the leadership qualities you need to have a great quarterback. This game is a great stepping stone for Steve to build on." IOWAHEAD coach Hayden Fry also had praise for Smith's performance saying he thought the junior helmsman is the best combination quarterback ih the country. Inside linebacker Mike Boren received the team's defensive cham- pion award. The 6-3, 228-pound junior had 12 solo tackles and five assists. 'Mike was in a lot of plays making hits from sideline to sideline," said defen- sive coordinator Gary Moeller. "He showed us how good an inside linebacker he is, and he is improving each week.' Michigan Grid Statistics Team Daily Photo by BRIAN MASCK Wolverine defensive backs John Lott (left) and Jerry Burgei put the crunch on Michigan State tight end Terry Tucker during Michigan's 31-17 victory Saturday.;Despite suffering a fractured left forearm later in the game, Lott is probable for this weekend's contest against Iowa. LEVY The women's field hockey team cont- inued its dominance over Michigan's other universities, last Friday, as the stickers defeated Northern Michigan. 41, to go with previous victories over Michigan State and Central Michigan. Perhaps the most significant aspect of the win over Northern is that the Wolverines (7-1) are now ranked 21st in the nation. According to assistant coach Laura Pieri, this is the first time ever that a Michigan field hockey team has been ranked in the top twenty-four. They are also ranked fourth in the Mid- west, behind; Iowa, Northwestern, and Southwest Missouri. AGAINST the Wildcats, goals were *scored by sophomores Jamie, Fry and Lisa Schofield, junior Kay McCarthy and senior Marty Maugh. Although Michigan appeared to dominate, the Northern team drew praise for showing improvement over last year's squad. "They are a lot better than last year," said junior co-captain Heidi Dit chendorf. "Their stick-work has im- proved, and they were challenging us for the ball with more pressure than *ast.year," she said. Through the first eight games, right link McCarthy leads the team in scoring with twelve goals and five assists, followed by Schofield, forward, (nine and three),, senior halfback Dee AP Top Twenty Jones (seven assists), and halfback Maugh (one and three). ON DEFENSE, sophomore goalie Jonnie Terry has been a standout only allowing six goals, while recording 43 saves for a .876 percentage. Solid performances by these players and the rest of the team will be essen- tial this coming Friday when Michigan hosts Iowa. The Hawkeye's are curren- tly 12-0 and ranked number one in the nation. "Iowa has depth; they have 11 good players plus," said Pieri. THE HAWKEYE'S are led by their all-American goalie, Donna Lee, who played in the National Sports Festival last summer. However, Pieri has con- fidence in Michigan goal keeper Terry. "Iowa has excellent goal keeping, but I think Jonnie is better." The Iowa game is Friday afternoon at 4:00.
