Forget about Mr. Oc- tober out in Anaheim. Disregard the an- tics of America's Team down in Atlan- ta. Howard Cosell should be babbling on about the exploits of Rumsey Blue, whose crushing 20-0 victory over Taylor Gold earned them the first spot in the residence hall semifinals. Tommy Lasorda should not be lamenting the fact that he couldn't successfully defend his World Series title, he should be extolling the efforts of the Bush Bun- nies, who advanced to the finals of the Women's division with a victory over the Southern Transfers. The champions in each division will be decided on or before Tuesday, and you can continue to follow the exploits of your favorite team next week in the Daily. FRATERNITY Seven teams entered the playoffs aiming for Tuesday's finals. The field has already narrowed to four teams as Beta Theta Pi,, Phi Delta Theta and Lambda Chi Alpha were eliminated in this weed's quarter-final round. Theta Delta Chi will square off against Sigma Alpha Epsilon on Tuesday at 7:00. On an adjacent field, Triangle will face Sigma Nu in the other semi-final game. The winners will play immediately af- ter those games finish to decide the championships. The team to look for: Sigma Nu, it has not given up a run in its two previous games. Here are two of last week's playoff games. Triangle 17, Lambda Chi Alpha 5 Triangle wasted no time in this game. I M Roundup Five singles in the first inning staked them to a 3-0 lead. Lambda Chi Alpha stayed close through four innings, trailing by 8-4 going into the fifth. Triangle then broke the game open. Seven consecutive runners reached base before Keith Korpi put the finishing touches on the nine-run rally with a two-run homer. Jim Lisi went four for four with two triples and a home run for the winners, while Richard Peske added three hits. Ian Thornburn scored twice for Lambda Chi. Sigma Alpha Epsilon 9, Phi Delta Theta 3 Paul Fryermuth's triple in the first inning capped a two-run outburst for SAE. A three-run homer by Mark Derha in the second and a four-run fifth inning sealed Phi Delta's fate. 5 Leading hitters for SAE were Chris Fowler and Fryermuth. Jeff Harris scattered eight hits in limiting Phi Delta to three runs. RESIDENCE HALL Th'ere were so many good residence hall teams that there are three playoff divisions with a total of 59 teams. Com- pare this with the quality of major league baseball where only four teams were good enough to make the playoffs. The following teams have reached the quarter-final round in the 'A' division: Van Tyne Varsity, Fletcher A, Elliot G. Men, and the Adam Ants. In the only quarterfinal game already played, Rumsey Blue plastered Taylor Gold 20-0. The Blue are the team to watch next week. A game from last week: Adam's Ants 9, Kelsey Roots Gold 8 Pete Burdalas scored the winning run in extra innings to allow Adam to ad- vance to the quarterfinals. The Ants needed a big rally to win the game. Going into the fifth inning, they trailed 7-0 and their championship hopes looked dim. But it was Kelsey's turn to get antsy when their lead was cut to a single run in the fifth inning. Curt Dobler had the key hit in the six-run rally, a home run with two men on base. The Ants 'still needed a two-run seventh to send the game into extra ,in- nings and had to survive Kelsey's eighth inning, when they put two men on base. Brad Maxon's three for four effort with two RBIs was nullified by the Ants' late inning comeback. WOMEN A field of three exceptional teams has already been narrowed to two. The Bush Bunnies defeated the Southern Transfers last Sunday to reach the finals, where they will face the H.B.'s, which received a first-round bye. This division is a toss-up, as both teams have won their previous games im- pressively. Although the H.B.'s may be HOPPING mad, the coin toss favors the Bush Bunnies to capture this cham- pionship. In the 'B' division, only three teams are left of the six that made the playof- fs. W.D. Awesome has already reached the final round while Hunt House and Wenley have yet to play their semifinal game. Make an Awesome pick for this championship. INDEPENDENT COMPETITIVE The quarterfinalists have been decided in the 'A' division of the in- dependent competitive league. The Beaver Patrol kept its impressive win- ning ways going with a 19-0 thrashing of Vanilla Thunder. Another team that has been very impressive has been the Cocksmen, who rolledto a 7-0 victory over the Rasta men to advance. Kid Ginsoe and the Dilly Bars have shown IM followers a strong squad this season, but the choice for overall honors here is the Patrol. The 'B' division is much more wide-open, and any number of teams could be the champs. Teams that should be closely watched are The Boys in Business, The McGarret 12's, and Brewer's Best. The 'C' bracket should be a showdown bet- ween the Fun Bags and the Bruins. JP in Your 113, Sphinky's Crackers 1 The Crackers took an early one-run lead in this battle to advance to the quarterfinals. Cam Hill tripled in the first and scored on a force out. That was the only lead that Sphinky's men were to see, as JP and his crew blasted the game apart with six runs in the third inning. A similar six-run outburst in the fourth turned the game into a rout. Dave Recker was 3-4 and pitched In Your I to the victory. Rich Joyrich was three-for-three with two runs scored, and Rob Humphries added a home run in the seventh for good measure. Beaver Patrol 19, Vanilla Thunder Six runs in the first were enough for the Patrol as they eased their way into the quarters over a thunderless Vanilla Thunder. Mike Rucinski was four-for- four with two home runs, seven RBI's, and four runs scored to pace the Beaver onslaught. Mike Czarnota added a pair of homers and six RBI's, and Dave Nelson scored three times, as Vanilla Thunder was devastated. The McGarret 12's 12, MM's 11 Bill Knauer doubled and scored on an error in the bottom of the seventh to give the 12's the victory in the 'B' division playoffs, The MM's took a three-run lead in the first and led 10-9 after four innings. 6 ,0 * IM Scores Softball WOM1EN'S Bush Bunnies 10, Southern Transfers 5 W.D.
