INDIANAPOLIS (AP)- The National
Organization for Women plans to be a
major force in politics in 1984 with 1
million members, a large campaign
war chest and hundreds of
knowledgeable feminists as candidates
and campaign workers, NOW president
Eleanor Smeal said yesterday.
As a step toward increasing NOW's
membership from its current 220,000,
Ms. Smeal unveiled television ads
designed to enlist new members. The
ads emphasize NOW's role as a lobbyist
for women's rights and as a source of
campaign money for feminist can-
didates-NOW has a $250,000 budget for
the ads, which will run early next year.

Steinem refuted recent claims that
the country has been won over
politically by the "New Right."
"Ronald Reagan may have the White
House," she said, "but we have the
country. There is no single issue in
Reagan's platform that does have the
majority (support)."
Earlier yesterday, in an exclusive
Detroit interview, Steinem told the
Daily, "I question whether conser-
vatism is really creeping back into
campuses, because I think that the ac-
tivism or radicalism was defined in
masculine terms in the 60s. It was
bombing buildings and having demon-
strations and so on.
" I THINK transforming the power
relationships on campus is even more
important," she said yesterday. "We
now have (on campus) black studies,
women's studies; that's very radical
change."
In her speech last night, Steinem
stressed the importance of women
working together and sharing ideas.
"We have no choice, in fact, but to say
that we will go forward. There is no
turning back."

movement in tthe early 70s with her
book, "Sexual Politics," echoed
Steinem's sentiments on Reagan. "We
awoke one morning," she said, "to find
a cowboy actor in charge."
ACCORDING TO Millett, the
problems of women have become inter-
nalized. "We are the generation of
women who saw the new day. We saw
the revolution," she said. "The world
has now made that a frown and a fight.
We feminists are hanging on with our
fingernails."
These internal problems, Millett said,
have curtailed political activism. "The
subtle propaganda that is ruling us now
has made it impossible for us to have
political activism," she said. "There
have been no wholesale protests - ex-
cept against nuclear war - in the past
few years."
Walker, a noted poet, read from
pieces that symbolized the struggle o(
all minorities. "It would be good
perhaps to put an end to the species
rather than let white men subjugate it,"
she said. "They've (white men) never
met any new creature without abusing
and destroying it."
