A vocalist as well as instrumentalist, Rushen has left few musical styles unexplored, and with Straight from the Heart, her seventh solo LP, she has taken the op- portunity to display her best of these multi-musical talents. At 28, Rushen comes to us from Los Angeles, where she began developing her musical talents at the age of three. j Truly a child prodigy, she performed classical recitals by the age of six and continued her formal musical studies well into her teens. Rushen began her career on the recording scene with two albums in a style that was considered by critics to be "an imaginative fusion of complex jazz and classical interpretations." Rushen followed up these first two in- strumental attempts with her third LP Shout it Out, which launched her into the musical arena in which she now performs. With this LP, Rushen revealed her own vocals for the first time. Now, Rushen has washed the disco out of her style and replaced it with a jazzy-funk that certainly makes a statement. With such hits as "Forget Me Nots" and "Remind" leading her latest album Rushen: Post-disco funk Straight From the Heart on the R&B and pop charts, it's no wonder that the entire LP is gaining proper recognition. On this album, Rushen offers slow tunes to break the heart as well as up- beat tunes such as "Breakout," which she refers to as her tribute to "good ole' rock 'n roll." The entire album offers 'the exploding vocal and instrumental talent that makes Rushen's plea to "forget me not" one not to be taken lightly. Grif- fin, one of the most distinguished tenor saxists in jazz, should be familiar to Ann Arbor audiences, as this will be his third appearance in the last four years. It was after spending a decade and a half in Europe, that Griffin accom- panied Dexter Gordon on a triumphal homecoming tour in 1978. Griffin brought an appreciative Hill Auditorium crowd it its feet during an electrifying blues solo, far surpassing the later performance in New York that was released as an LP. More recently, Griffin's quartet headlined (and stole) a show at the.Michigan Theater that co- starred alto sax maniac Richie-Cole. Griffin was one of a generation of American jazz expatriates, who, fin- ding their art ignored in the United States, moved to the more hospitable jazz scene in Europe. Nicknamed the "Little Giant," the 5- foot-3-inch Griffin has always stood tall as a player, making furious high-speed bebop his trademark. His current band, featuring Ronnie Matthews on piano, maintains the high standards of taste and virtuosity that Griffin has always demanded of his sidemen. (This band accompanied Griffin at the Michigan Theater, when Griffin was seen sniffing disdainfully at Cole's relatively amateurish backup band.) Griffin's shows are guaranteed pages from jazz history, so local jazz fans are behooved to hie on down to the U-Club Saturday night to check out the Johnnie Griffin quartet. 15% CUFFI ALL MERCHANDISE WITH THIS COUPONU (Except Sole Items) selected Merchandise up to 50% off in our now bargain basement.
