The Michigan Daily -Friday, October 8, 1982-Page 11 Senate candidate endorses nuclear reeze y KENT REDDING epublican senatorial candidate Phil ORuppe announced yesterday his sup- port of the nuclear freeze proposal on Michigan's November ballot. Ruppe also called, for strengthening the student loan program but said he supports strict repayment plans BRAVING intermittent rain showers, Ruppe yesterday told a small turnout of supporters on the steps of the Michigan Union that the freeze would both reduce the threat of nuclear war and reduce budget deficits by eliminating the need for new and expensive nuclear weapons systems. "I want to be sure we have money for student loan programs," he said, ad- ding that he wants to funnel money saved from a nuclear freeze into educational programs and to train students and laid-off workers in high technology skills. "I am convinced that a mutual, verifiable nuclear freeze is absolutely necesary to successful arms reductions efforts .. and to the long-term safety of the world," he said. Archbishop to be "deported within 60 days * From AP and UPI DETROIT - Romanian Orthodox Archbishop Valerian Trifa yesterday admitted Nazi-era activities with the Iron Guard, described as "violent, fascist, and anti-Semitic" and was or- dered deported within 60 days. Trifa, who hopes to find refuge in Switzerland, will become the first per- son deported from the United States for concealing war crimes from im- migration officials, said Neal Sher, deputy director of the Office of Special Investigations in the U.S. Justice Department. UNDER AN agreement with the federal government, Trifa admitted lying to immigratin authorities to cover up his fascist sympathies when he en- tered the United States 32 years ago. He agreed to leave the United States rather than continue the civil depor- tation proceeding. His trial had begun 0*Monday before Immigration Judge Aellino D'Ambrosio in Detroit. ile ricals ilast raise t(46ntinued from Page 1) _The movement to unionize non fculty employees resurfaced on cam- puis last month when about 90 workers rallied outside the Administration Byilding and speakers called for an employee's union. ,Past efforts to unionize campus workers have fizzled for lack of popular support, but organizers think they may have better luck today since many workers are angry about the pay hikes. ."YEAH, LITTLE old, grey-haired ladies voted us out," sighed Sharron Wenzel, a secretary for the Senate Ad- * visory Committee on University Af- fairs. Wenzel agreed that the $2 million is an attempt to quiet efforts to unionize. "I have thought that for years, and no one will ever be able to change my mind," she said. As specifics on the $2 million increase won't be released until this month's Regent's meeting, both union workers and clerical workers expressed some reluctance to comment on the pay in- crease. "I think people are waiting for some kind of a plan - they (University officials) haven't set a percentage yet," said Shirley Silverman, a secretary in the psychology department. DAWN CHALKER, an assistant in the medical center library, agreed that most people have not heard much about the propsed pay hikes. "If they do come through with two or three per- cent," Chalker said, "it's more of a gesture."
